Milan/Venice/Garda

Going at the back end of September so it should have cooled down a little by then.

Staying in place called Desenzano del Garda, mainly because of the transport links and the fact we will using the train a lot. Only be there for a couple of days but it looks nice enough and not too far from Simione if we fancy something posh for the day - unlikely.
That's at the bottom of the lake.
Go up to Malcesine which is on the east side and take the boat over to Limone.
Only takes about 20 mins but the views are fantastic.
We stayed in Malcesine and it is beautiful.

If you get chance take the ferry round the lake, you can get a day ticket, nice restaurant in Castiglione, I'll post it's name if I can remember it.

Was in Milan a few weeks back, lovely City, quite warm. The Majestic Cafe is somewhere central to snack during the day, they will treat you right. Think three night is enough in Milan its not overly touristy but I enjoyed that.

Malcesine on lake Garda is beautiful - went up the monte Baldo in the cable car from there long time ago - worth a trip if it's still running.
Best tip of all - learn some basic Italian - they love it when tourists do that and I've had all sorts of extras as a result - discounts in shops and even the odd free glass of the vino rosso!

In Venice, get a water taxi to Isola di Burano - peaceful, colourful lovely little island of Venice to stroll about on for an hour.

The Navigili district in Milan is really buzzing at night, loads of bars serving aperitivo (quite possibly the Italians' finest invention), people sat by the canals, nice restaurants and gelaterie. I didn't really expect much from Milan (we were mainly using it as a means to get to Bologna, which is a fantastic city), but I was pleasantly surprised by how nice and laid-back parts of it were.

Don't talk to be about Bologna, the cunts once filled my van up with diesel, nearly blew it up and then charged me for it, to drain it and fill it up with petrol. Probably some of the best food in Italy mind. The restaurant name in castiglione was the Osteria.

A very enjoyable way to spend the day

Desenzano is a good place to stay. A bit more going on in the evening

Thanks for the replies everyone - can't wait.

I've heard that you can rent a speedboat - in Lake Garda, not Milan - for a couple of hours at a relatively decent price, so will definitely do that.
