Milner and width

I don't see this good short passing game he is supposed to have. Stoke away.

1 in 2 of his crosses are decent, the rest are shite.

-- Wed Apr 24, 2013 3:47 pm --

Milner is best when he fires low crosses across the front of goal - Take the assists at the swamp last year, the one to Nasri at Spurs for example.
That wasn't a good cross.

I think Milner's crossing/delivery is never really outstanding or awful but consistently middle of the road, the problem is it needs to be outstanding to be effective with how we're set up and the players we have to attack the crosses.

I don't think JM is a poor crosser of the ball at all. He did also play out wide for Villa at times (as did Gaz Baz in his early days) and was a good provider. One of the problems is that when he's managed to get into good positions he's always trying to find a needle in a haystack, often trying to pick-out one City shirt in a 'box full of defenders.
We need to have the option of attacking with more pace and need to get players further up the pitch, rather than the slow deliberate build-up all the time.

The one for Nasri was a shit pass IMO.
It was not the precise pass it should have been from that position.
Hit far too hard.
Against Chelsea (when Kompany missed ) he broke away had three players to
pass it to a banged like a rocket at the keeper.
No, final pass is not on his CV.

Yet people want him in the middle. He is not a good passer of the ball.

Firstly this is not an anti milner thread. For the record he has been very good for us this season and especially in the last few games (i think the loss of milner had a huge negative effect vs spurs and was pone of the reasons we lost control of the midfield)

Milners best attributes are his work rate, defending and short passing game.

The biggest negative about him is his crossing ability..its very average at best (if im being honest its pretty woeful imho). He gets himself into some fantastic positions but all too often his final ball is poor.

Now not for one second do I think we should sell him.

But i do think that we need to bring in a player(s) this summer that has the same work ethic as JM but has a better final delivery and is more of an effective attacking player (Milner is extremely good defensively but is average in an attacking sense)......

The type of player(s) that we need is of the Ronaldo mould (not saying we are going to get someone of his level, but what I do mean is that we need someone who is of the same mould.....strong (not a walcott/sinclair type) quick with good delivery and can make a consistent contribution going forward.

I think milner will eventually succeed Barry at some point

I dare say that Joe Hart wouldn't be any good at crossing the ball from the wing either, but then he's not a winger either!

I think people are trying to find a place for him.
I always ask myself would a player get into any other team in the top four.
Rag's NO
Chelsea NO
Arsenal NO

I know we cannot have a team of eleven superstars but we need to inject some pace
into the team, we need someone else in midfield or wide on the same wavelength as Silva.
We need to develope a fast passing game. Milner and Barry do not fit in here.
Not to say they cannot play a role as squad players.
(but not in European games)

Said it at the start of the season, he is a centre midfielder - we could have treated him as one, wouldn't have had to buy one of either Garcia or Rodwell so would have been able to buy a PROPER winger instead.

This, we'd of gone into the season with NDJ, Barry, Yaya & Milner central... Much stronger and much richer than it turned out this year!!!

like i said at the start; it isnt necessarily about buying out and out wingers.....

look at utd, they have various players who can deliver a good cross: rooney, rvp plus their fullbacks and wide players......whereas we have kolorov and maicon).....but none of our attacking players can including milner; you could also add silva, aguero, tevez nasri to that list as well......

what we need as i have said are attacking players (not necessarily wingers) who have this in their locker; the ability to put the ball into the box at pace in a variety of wways and from a variety of positions.

we do create width at present but we dont have the ball players to exploit it
