Miralem Pjanic.

Its likely that this won’t happen and it’s just his agent leaking fake interest trying to get him a new deal at Juve, especially since we briefed that we aren’t interested and the fact it’s not our style to blow that much money on one player.

But why do the Italian media keep running with our interest then? Surely once we briefed no interest the noise on this would die down, and if it was the agent leaking fake interest he’d stop?
And it’s not just one or two sources in Italy banging the Pjanic-City drum, it’s multiple well respected sources/journalists.

Theres a few things that makes me think there’s something going on here behind the scenes and that our press brief is not totally honest and just us trying to keep things quiet after the Jorginho nightmare:

1. We clearly need a deep lying midfielder. I’m sorry but there’s no way Pep is happy with ‘filling the position from within the squad’ when he was so keen to bring Jorginho in. I’m personally of the opinion that Gundogan can do a job there, but if Fern gets any sort of injury or form drop off I’m not so sure Gundo (or Delph, Gomes) could fill that role for any length of time. Pep and the club clearly knows this or they wouldn’t have bothered going for Jorginho in the first place. You don’t attempt to spend close to 50 mil on a player when you truthfully believe you have enough in the squad already.

2. Remember back to January, Alexis Sanchez had just fucked off to United and we thought we weren’t getting anyone. Then out of nowhere news started appearing that we were close to a deal for Mahrez. I remember I didn’t believe it at first but things picked up and it was clear that our interest was very genuine. Obviously things didn’t work out in January for Mahrez and I remember people calling it a ‘panic buy’ anyway just because we missed out on Sanchez. Then news started coming out that we’d actually made 3 or 4 bids for Mahrez during January, some of which came when we were still in the hunt for Alexis, our #1 target.
Now I’m someone who follows City Watch on Twitter pretty religiously. It keeps me entertained during the transfer window even though half the stories they relay turn out to be bullshit. But I do seem to remember a story they posted a month or two back stating we’d bid around 60 million for Pjanic. It came from an Italian source and most (including myself) brushed it off as complete rubbish because at the time we looked nailed on to sign Jorginho. It was also just a weird story as we’d barely been linked with anyone but Jorginho and Mahrez the whole window and it was an open secret they were our main and only 2 targets.
What if the Pjanic Story was true and it was a January, Mahrezesque type bid to test the waters on a potential backup target should Jorginho fall through?

Just strange because at the time everybody knew Jorginho was the one we wanted and a story about us bidding on Pjanic seemed ridiculous.

I do think there’s something in this Pjanic-City thing personally. Maybe it won’t happen and negotiations between us and Juve won’t come to anything, but I think there’s something going on behind the scenes that the UK press are being kept in the dark about until things get really serious.

Anyway essay over. Roll on next season, whatever happens happens!

I think you maybe right. We tend to see our transfer business molded be recent events. We have had a number of drawn out and well publicised deals and in all recent deals we seem to be very cagey about how much we are willing to pay out.

I fully endorse this approach - in this crazy market clubs will be getting burned and players ending up where they don't want to be. It will be very difficult in the long run for these clubs/players to get out of these bad deals. We should look to keep wages and transfer fee's somewhere sensible and we are doing that as much as possible but it leads to drawn out transfers like Sanchez and Mahrez where things don't just happen over night.

So with that as the backdrop - we could be in for him, as quietly as possible and with a lowish bid on a take it or leave it basis (this window). That would fit with recent activity. We are not going to go piling in to a bidding war.

Dream signing..More exciting than Jorginho was.
Would immeditely become the best DM in the PL.Only Casemiro (unattainable) is better than him in Europe imo.Fernandinho is fantastic in his own way but Pjanić is levels ahead.
Takes our midfield,as good as it currently is,to a higher level especially against the bigger teams and in the CL,where we tend to struggle to relieve pressure.
In a market where the likes of Alisson are going for 65 M £ and Richarlison for 50 M £,100 M € for a player of his quality is peanuts..Whether we are at all interested or would be prepared to meet Juve's asking price is another issue

If there is a possibility however remote, the last thing the club will do is put it out there after jorginho saga we have to keep schtum and let this only become knowledge, only if he is sat with Txiki pen in hand If the club are genuine, and happy with their lot, then imho they are playing a dangerous game If we are aware of our deficiency then it goes without saying our PEP is. and if the season goes tits up, it could be due to the one obvious weakness we have We could win the league or not with or without a DM but i say give PEP the tools to do the job Its tough to win the league but its a damn site tougher to retain it

Juve are very influential in Italy - just as journalists here queue up to do United or Liverpool’s bidding; so they do there. Juve need to raise funds so their friends in the press are trying to create an auction. Could be something but more likely smoke and mirrors to flush someone else out.

The problem with that theory is that the last thing Juve want is to sell Pjanic, he's regarded as one of their best players and is the main creator in midfield, whether he plays as a number 10 or deeper.

If they lose him, they've got Matuidi, Khedira, Can, Bentacur, Sturaro and Marchisio as midfield options...outside Marchisio who's always injured, that's not a midfield that can create anything.

Juve want to sell players like Higuain to raise a bit of cash, not their crown jewels.

True but they could sell to raise funds for SMS from Lazio.

You'd not buy him to replace Pjanic though, you'd want him doing the box to box role beside him - and again why sell one of your best players to bring in another good one, it's 1 step forward 1 step back.

It just doesn't make sense that they're trying to create a bidding war using the media for a player they don't want to sell.

Perhaps. But if the player/agent is pushing for a move (as mentioned in the Italian press) then that changes the dynamics.
