although...'The Night' by Frankie Valli & the 4 seasons was on Motown...along with a lot of their early work...
There's a big difference between being able to 'do soul' and produce a great pop record.
I'm a big fan of Frankie Valli but I would never say he was (or that he would claim to be) specifically a soul singer. He's a pop music singer who made some great dance records, as were many others signed to Motown (including R Dean Taylor).
Let's face it, Motown was all about making money after about 1970.
