Please!!!! Can somebody explain to me why a set of saucepans painted in different colours hung on a wall is artistic. Or a 6ft wide ashtray full of dimps and empty cig packets is thought provoking and pushes the boundaries?
Am I missing something here? Am I that much of a philistine or ignoramus that I can't see the merits of these "works of art"?

Completely agree and it's annoying. I also don't class Damien Hirst's work as "art"

That's the bloke the programme was about. He stood there with a straight face showing off his latest "work". The sycophants who offer up explanations about it being cutting edge and challenging are even worse. All I was thinking was, it's an ashtray, just a fucking giant ashtray. They make you feel thick for not recognising that it is something other than just a fucking giant ashtray.

Its not about what it is,its what it represents
Enlighten me. What does a 6 foot wide ashtray full of dimps and cig packets represent?

It's an analogy for the way we live today, with the ashtray symbolising our throw away society. You couldn't paint a picture and get that message across,it has to be big ,bold and controversial,as it will be the thing that finishes off the human race.
The unmade bed was a confessional piece, telling the world what and who you are but in a way that would grab your attention, everyone focusing on the stains and the detrius. When we should be saying how honest and brave to lay yourself open to public scrutiny.
Mind you Jeff Koons is a fucking charlatan of the highest order, and that tent Emin did, with all the blokes she'd knobbed on it should have been a marquee.

I quite like modern art

I went to an exhibition in Manchester years ago and there was this piece, a park bench with grass. A girl I was seeing put her foot in the grass whilst asking if it was 'real'

Funny as fuck as she got a stern telling off...
