I think Mancini likes his midfielders (not attacking midfielders) to be stronger and more combative than Modric is as a solid defensive base is such an important part of Mancini's footballing philosophy to create a platform for the front four (and sometimes the full-backs) to run wild. That could be why we are linked with De Rossi, Martinez, and M'Vila (strong midfielders with good passing ability) rather than Modric or Sahin.

You can't play Modric alongside Yaya. They do the same job. Look at what playing Song and Arteta together did to Arsenal's defensive record last year. Although to be fair their back 4 is shit too. (Other than Koscielny).

You need a defensive midfielder, and a ball playing central midfielder. Barry and Yaya. Mikel and Lampard. Khedira and Alonso. Busquets and Xavi.

Modric is a MASSIVE player Spuds. Can understand why Levy doesn't want him to go for anything less than ridiculous money. He's the type of player that is difficult to replace. Mostly because the best want to play for the best. Creativity is not our problem...Stability, in the middle, is what we need. Experience, vision and strength. Modric has two of these.

Barry is not limited. A limited player cannot form one half of a premier league title winning midfield. Yaya, despite being a defensive mid his whole career leaves 90% of the defensive midfield work to Barry, which he handles superbly. His distribution is excellent and without him the team suffers tremendously. Watch games where De Jong partnered Yaya, there's a massive difference.

Great teams all have a player like Barry to handle the work that lets the other players shine. Busquets, Khedira, Carrick, Obi Mikel, etc are all examples of this
