Modric

ANDRE VERY-BORING will check Modric’s mental state before deciding whether to welcome him back into the Tottenham fold.

THE MENTALIST LOL!!!

Barry's not a bad player but he is extremely limited, Im sure City can quite easily get an upgrade for him.

Modric isn't a defensive midfielder but Yaya can drop there and put Modric alongside him.

£50mill btw...
Barry is not limited. A limited player cannot form one half of a premier league title winning midfield. Yaya, despite being a defensive mid his whole career leaves 90% of the defensive midfield work to Barry, which he handles superbly. His distribution is excellent and without him the team suffers tremendously. Watch games where De Jong partnered Yaya, there's a massive difference.
Great teams all have a player like Barry to handle the work that lets the other players shine. Busquets, Khedira, Carrick, Obi Mikel, etc are all examples of this

Perfectly put my friend.
Not sure about his peers that you have named though...Obi Mikel and Carrick?
The example I always use is Makalele

Anyone who is not a City fan would call Barry 'limited' - fact.

Most players are limited. How many headers does Messi score ?

Apart from this one ;)

He would destroy yayas game, he'd be constantly cleaning up after the ugly swine, and unless it hasn't been noticed yaya is the most explosive midfielder in the league- fact !!!

Think Modric and Yaya would make an ungodly partnership, possession and productivity with the ball would be amazing but luckily we're not going to have that issue unless you pay utterly ridiculous money, unless we can get Toure on loan but I don't see it myself...

We hear this a lot, usually from fans of other clubs who's opinion of Barry is based on one game for England when he wasn't fully fit.
He does his job without any fuss. His positioning and awareness is up there with the very best. He may not look spectacular but there's a reason Mancini plays him as often as he does and lets not forget that if he wanted to, he could afford to replace him in a heartbeat.

A Villa fan said it best when we first signed him. "You'll watch him every week and wonder what all the fuss is about, but the first time he isn't there, you'll realise exactly what the fuss is about"

Very underrated player, unlike Modric who like every Spurs player is very much overrated.

It's usually said by fans who truly believe in their one true footballing god - that is Scott E Parker.

Will Barry be fit this season? IMO we badly need 1 cb (Agger would be a dream) and 1 cm. Yaya is wasted playing deep and only NDJ and Barry can play in the middle. Zabba or Milner or a few others could be converted but it'd take time. Easiest thing is to get a quality midfielder who can play in the middle with confidence. Modric would be a candidate but there may be cheaper out there in front of our faces like Faurlin (sp) from QPR or Mulumbo from West Brom. Basically a very decent dependable player ( just like Barry).

I had hoped Milner was to be a CM for us when he signed but he seldom seems to play there and for all his effort his effectiveness is limited. But maybe there is more to come. His personality is such that you'd love him to become a key player for us.

And one more point .... Where are all the decent English bulldog midfielders?

I think the Barry thoughts generally stem from the South Africa World cup, mainly the Germany game.

I know he's a quality player but I think most people have an image of what he was like in that game, in which he was absolutely fucking dreadful, alongside many other of our players that day. A performance that bad on such an embarassing stage is unfortunately always going to be remembered, even if people aren't aware that he wasn't fit/injured/whatever. Cherish the Barry hate, much better to have underrated players than overrated players.

Got to disagree Stony! We have a few contenders for overrated but I'd have to put Kaboul and Benny in the underrated pile. *cue mass flaming of BAE and Kaboul, thus kind of proving my point..

Reading GG, I would have to say that Spurs fans vastly overrate Kaboul. There was a thread about him stating that he is as good as any centre-half in the country. This was backed up by some selective stats. Some claiming that the stats prove he is as good as Kompany (at that point I laughed heartily).

I reckon that if the press selected a City/Spurs XI, where the best players in each position are chosen, Bale, Walker, Modric, Parker, VDV and Defoe would be selected, a majority of Spurs players. The journalists will tell you that Spurs have the superior players and manager, play more as a team and have a better team spirit. Goodness knows how we won the league.

Try sticking Modric on his own with Ozil & several other Germans running at him & see how he gets on.

-- Thu Aug 02, 2012 12:24 pm --

Heh.

Somehow I thought it might get a mention ;)

We do need a midfielder and for me Modric is the type of player we need, someone who will keep the ball and do those long balls outwide, although Barry was excellent last season especially against United at home I do thing he has patches where he is very sloppy and in Europe especially he is caught out he is also getting on a bit. The reason I think we're not in for Modric is that he cant play in a midfield 2 with Yaya which is quite obvious as that would mean Toure couldn't bomb forward making him useless really. We really need another centre mid though for the start of next season if we're to challenge on all fronts as we rely way to much on Toure, if hes not in the team a midfield two of De jong and Barry is not good.
