As a lifelong City fan I'm happy with the signings made of recent. Time I reckon for our time in the sun once again, we've been in the shade to bloody long.

But let's be realistic about matters shall we?

RSC, Tevez,Barry and whoever else Hughes manages to sign have signed for the cash, pure and simple. They, the players, may say they're coming because they believe City are on the up but make no mistake about it, If we hadn't been able to offer them the wages do you honestly think they'd have signed for us?

Of course not.

To be honest with you I don't give a shit whether they play for us because they believe in City or because of the dosh we pay them. Just as long as they do the job on the field that'll suit me.

Something else: We are all expecting great things next season and I certainly hope our expectations come true---but what if they don't?

Suppose the players signed can't gel with each other, suppose their individual styles of play don't suit each other, what then?.

A harbinger of doom? not me, just being sensible and pragmatic so please don't shoot the messenger

Yeah, of course it's a black cloak.

He's the Grim Reaper, it's the death of football remember.

I always expected the harbinger of doom to wear sparkly pink and prance around in a leotard while bellowing a medley of Abba hits.

Cash comes with success or projected success. The players are coming as we're aiming high, very high. The wages come with playing at a top team and in that respect these players are getting an advance. They need to make us a top team.

Admittedly we're paying an extra premium aswell, otherwise we'd never be able to attract players from the top clubs in Europe.

The players might be attracted by the money in the first instance but most of them are professional so it wouldn't effect performance or effort and most of them are internationals, so a run of bad form wouldn't be such great timing in a World Cup season. The commercial stuff gets done straight away but loyalty and affection for the club isn't going to be built up until later, unless you're someone like Ned (i.e. a boyhood fan). Also, the more our new players are accused of greed, the better I'll like it because they will feel they have something to prove on an individual level (by trying their guts out) and they'll want to prove that ambition brought them to the club as well as money and the only way to do that is to win things. I could not give a flying hyena turd about their initial motivations. All footballers who join premiership clubs are doing it for the money. Let the pathetic media and the City bashers worry about that bullshit. It is said out of jealously but nobody genuinely believes it carries any significant for whether a player and a team are successful or not.

Ignore the idiots.

You cannot seriously expect professional football players to have the same allegiance to a team that we do as supporters. they have to be able to committ fully to whoever is paying their wages, so money or shirt is not really applicable.
More suitable would be money or trophies - but even this isnt black & white.

Would any of the players you mentioned sign for Coventry City if they were offered £500k per week - NO
Would any of the players you mentioned sign for Real Madrid & win trophies for £5 a week - NO

Extreme examples I know, but the truth is that of course maoney talks, but its a balance between money & success (immediate or future) that attracts players. Yes we can pay the wages, but we can also hold out the promise of future success. Thats why players of this calibre are coming here.

It´s clear that we´ll have to pay an extra premium due to our recent unsuccessful past but the dosh is really the means to an end - for the player it´s a sweetener, the icing on the cake - first we have to sell the dream, the challenge - the project if you will. Without the vision there´s nothing - a player has to be excited about coming to us coz if he isn´t he´s not the player we are looking for imo
