Money or the shirt ?

The truth of the matter is, 99% players are moving for the money and HOPE the move brings them silverware.
Simple question: do we want crap players as weve had for years joining for money? or world class players coming for the money?
simple really'''''
gerry Creaney came for the money - was shite - we lost most games...................Carlito comes for the money - will be great - we win loads of games...................SIMPLES.........................

As a lifelong City fan I'm happy with the signings made of recent. Time I reckon for our time in the sun once again, we've been in the shade to bloody long.

But let's be realistic about matters shall we?

RSC, Tevez,Barry and whoever else Hughes manages to sign have signed for the cash, pure and simple. They, the players, may say they're coming because they believe City are on the up but make no mistake about it, If we hadn't been able to offer them the wages do you honestly think they'd have signed for us?

Of course not.

To be honest with you I don't give a shit whether they play for us because they believe in City or because of the dosh we pay them. Just as long as they do the job on the field that'll suit me.

Something else: We are all expecting great things next season and I certainly hope our expectations come true---but what if they don't?

Suppose the players signed can't gel with each other, suppose their individual styles of play don't suit each other, what then?.

A harbinger of doom? not me, just being sensible and pragmatic so please don't shoot the messenger

Wow, and the award for stating the obvious goes to........

No-one signs for the shirt unless they were a fan as a kid (i.e. Robbie Keane to Liverpool) but would any player go anywhere just for the shirt? Would Tranny have gone to Real Madrid if they were poor and down at the bottom of La Liga? Would Shrek, or Ferdinand, or Berbatov have signed for United unless they had the money or league status? Did any of them go because of the shirt? Deffinately not.

The players might be attracted by the money in the first instance but most of them are professional so it wouldn't effect performance or effort and most of them are internationals, so a run of bad form wouldn't be such great timing in a World Cup season. The commercial stuff gets done straight away but loyalty and affection for the club isn't going to be built up until later, unless you're someone like Ned (i.e. a boyhood fan). Also, the more our new players are accused of greed, the better I'll like it because they will feel they have something to prove on an individual level (by trying their guts out) and they'll want to prove that ambition brought them to the club as well as money and the only way to do that is to win things. I could not give a flying hyena turd about their initial motivations. All footballers who join premiership clubs are doing it for the money. Let the pathetic media and the City bashers worry about that bullshit. It is said out of jealously but nobody genuinely believes it carries any significant for whether a player and a team are successful or not.

Ignore the idiots.

Great post Pam, well said.

At what club is this NOT the case anymore?

Fans love to delude themselves that players truly care about the club, but what percentage of players grew up supporting a different club than the one currently writing their paychecks? 97 per cent? 99 per cent?

Players might enjoy playing for one club more than another, or might find the fans more enjoyable at one club than another, but unless they're playing for the club they grew up supporting, it's just a case of preferences -- not love or pride or any of the other outdated concepts that we still hear about for some strange reason.

To be a messenger, you have to have someone from a higher authority than yourself give you information.

I wouldn't say it's sensible and pragmatic to just look at one side. Whilst a lot of posters who venture into the mammoth threads in this transfer section are, well, mind boggling, theres still a few out there willing to look at both sides.

The money is a big factor, but, if Bolton, for example, were offering the same money i doubt the same players would go there.

I think the money, combined with the fans, the stadium, the fact we're known for being loyal and lovable loosers as well as the "project" all fits into a pretty nice package in the end. Ambition to turn around an already seemingly favourable image into an even better one... its almost tragically poetic.

Players still want to play for fans who will chant thier name, get behind them and remember them for years to come, imo... as well as truck loads of cash.

This prick is so thick he has no respect for the team he grew up supporting! What a tosser! Do you think he'd be kissing that badge if they were struggling and had no money? Duh

Maybe they can see the ambition the club has and realise aswell as the added bonus of mega money, that we'll be contending for both domestic and international honours in the next few years and want to be a part of that?

No, no it's all about the short term incentives and where we are now...

Couldn't be bothered reading most of your post.

Tevez may have signed for money but the rest signed because frankly we have a much, much better of chance of breaking into the top 4. Also in RSC's case, he signed for Hughes, because city are a much bigger club that blackburn, and have a much higher average attendance.

All Mark Hughes's buys have one thing in common, commitment!!! All are hardworking and NOW have a point to prove.
