I'm going without alcohol in September to raise money for charity (and hopefully provide some health benefits). Going okay in the early stages but got a feeling the cravings won't be far away. To make matters worse, broke up with my girlfriend of 3 and a half years the day before the month started, she's a City fan just because of me, but I digress ...

Anyway, anyone done the month without alcohol thing, and any advice?

Think I am willing to try this as well, did it for a few months some years ago and it did bother me more than I thought.

A bit scary really I will drink at least 3 or 4 times a week if not more some weeks. My dad was a massive drinker and my brother too. I allways thought I was quite tamed compaired to them but was shocked about how much I missed it!

When I did have my frist pint after 2 month I flet it stright away and was drunkish after my second. I could easy drink 5 beers now without feeling too bad.

I'll start mine after next weekend, 1 month and see how it goes.

No offence mate but you sound like an alcoholic. Lets put it this way you've got serious problems if you can't go a month without a beer. Do you mean its the social situations you miss ? If that's the case just become the designated driver that way you can still go out but don't have to have a drink as your driving.

As for the health benefits as someone that used to be a major major piss head. There are none that I've experienced except for not being hung over and the long term benefits that you don't really feel because there long term.

I wouldn't say I'm an alcoholic? I can turn down a drink if I am not in the mood or if I have a big day the next day. But when I have had the big day or a busy day at work I like a few glasses/or a bottle of wine to chill with while watching the football or a film?

I do miss the social side of it but again to be fair like most others my age, with kids don't go out has much as I use too.

Most people would miss drinking for a month, just the relax state after a shit day or to shift the nervious at a wedding you don't know anyone. Just that kind of thing?

(Plus can't drive)

Have done a few random 4-7 week stints off it once or twice a year. Just find when your on it quite often its hard to break the cycle.

But felt a lot healthier with it though, may do another month stint soon before i go on hols. It's a lot easier with shift work especially when i'm on weekends.

I found that a distraction such as the gym helped. And when there's a lull in the sport calender. Can watch the Footie and the Rugby mostly without a beer. But for some reason i love a few with a nice curry when watching the boxing.

Not looking for tips, that would be easy........ just stop drinking. But saying its strange how much you miss it?

Breaking the cycle, as said. you get use even to having one or two drinks a night or a few times a week, don't know what you do on a weekly bases but just think of stopping it for a month or 2? you would miss it?

I reckon this could be really hard for someone who regularly drinks.

I'd get a pint glass and put money into it everytime you feel like a drink. at the end of the month you'll see how much money you save - put this towards the charity as well.

Myself, many men have fallen to alcohol in my ancestry - knowing this since being a kid I can take or leave alcohol. I usually leave it, only have a drink when watching City.
