I know you’re being facetious but we know that people aren’t saying we’ve been shit the last ten years, it’s that we’ve dropped off because our better players are ageing/left and most recent replacements haven’t been of the same standard.
We all want City to get back to the levels we saw when we had Yaya, David Silva, prime Gundogan and KDB, Sané, etc.
Signings like Phillips and Nunes were nowhere near that. MGW is nowhere near that either. We watched while arsenal got Rice.
Plus we still have no full backs.
We need two top class, quick fullbacks (Kerkez? Livramento?) and the very best available attacking midfielder (Wirtz) plus possibly a winger that actually scores goals (Nico Williams? Eze?)
We need ambition and some billy big bollocks transfers. We have the second highest income after Real Madrid - why not spend like that? If we don’t, we’ll have to endure another fucking scouse title next season.
Out of interest, what's the difference between signing Rice from West Ham and signing MGW from Forest? Both captains but one (MGW) has helped his team to fight above their apparent station and challenge for a Champions League place.
We can't act like Rice was a world beater when Arsenal snapped him up. There were a lot of comments on here saying we shouldn't pay £100m+ for him when we were linked. The same type of comments we're now seeing with MGW.
Players like Silva and Yaya are a rarity, let's face it. They don't just lie around anymore - Valencia needed to cash in on Silva and Yaya wasn't wanted at Barca. KDB was a world beater signing, yes, but we're trying to do the same with Wirtz this Summer too.
Sane was relatively unknown and was a gamble that paid off.
Prime Gundogan? Not necessarily, he was still injured and nobody really knew if he'd be able to recapture his form given just how bad his injury was (hence the price). Then he had another major one a few months after joining us. I see Nico G's signing as much of the same, he comes with good pedigree and is a bit of a risk like Gundo was. Just for different reasons.
I get your point - we need to lay down a marker a bit - but you can't do that with every signing.
For every Haaland there's an Alvarez (2022). For every KDB there's a Delph (2015). For every Yaya there's a Milner (2010). And for every potential Wirtz, there's a MGW. The list probably goes on.
I'd be more than happy with MGW signing. He'd bring energy and much-needed legs in midfield all while being comfortable on the ball, aggressive in the tackle and has an eye for goal. He'd compliment Nico G and Rodri well IMO as he is always looking for the ball and they're always looking to play it forward.
