The Smiths do have a few top songs, but most are ruined by Morrissey's voice. And how fucking depressing is he? I had a worse upbringing than him yet I don't go on about it. He needs to get on with life instead of drowning in self-pity.

I cannot agree with the opinion that Morrissey and his music, either as a solo artist or with The Smiths, as 'depressing'. IMO he's a comedy genius. The fact that his delivery is deadpan may be why people think he's miserable. Even in his interviews he regularly delivers funny remarks, often at the interviewer's expense.

I wouldn't want to meet him though as I have heard from a mate, who has worked from him, that he's an arse. Now my friend has worked with the likes of Eminen, Amy Winehouse, Scissor sisters, Sugababes and many others but he found Morrissey to be far more difficult to deal with.

The Smiths are the greatest band ever. Full stop.

The thing with all this ''depressing'' crap thrown in their direction is critics don't read beyond the song titles ''Girlfriend in a coma'', ''Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now'' etc etc
Yet contained within these lyrics are the funniest and wittiest lines going.

Morrissey as a solo artist has had many high points (''Vauxhall & I'') and many low points (''Maladjusted'', ''Kill Uncle'') - yet recently playing back some of these low points, I actually appreciate them a lot more today than when they came out (OK, maybe not so much ''Kill Uncle'' lol)

But give me Morrissey today over Coldplay / Keane / Kings of Leon etc etc.
