I have never seen such bad reviews for a book. I was a big fan of The Smiths and still listen occasionally today. I saw them live and, whilst I was more in the New Order camp (Mancunians of my age will understand what I mean- you could like both but you only loved one), I thought they were brilliant.
But like most of the great bands who spilt, Morrissey was not very special without Marr, and he made this ten times worse by not settling with a writing partner or band, and alienating everyone who came in contact with him. He should have stuck with Vini Reilly and at least his career post smiths could have had at least a minor cultural impact, instead of drifting into irrelevance and self-parody.
When I was a teenager I quite admired his acerbic wit and refusal to compromise, but now I've got older I've realised he is a Weapons Grade Nutcase who never even had the bottle to come out.
But his legacy stands in songs like 'That Joke isn't Funny Anymore'
