Most momentous International event in your lifetime?

Probably 9/11 was the most shocking.

Those that affected me most personally were:

2004 Tsunami

Collapse of communism in Central/Eastern Europe

Covid

Interesting that the overwhelming choices are disasters, which rarely have lasting consequences compared to positive events.
Think of the effect of polio vaccine being introduced in the 50s or the massive consequences of satellite tech (1957) or the unravelling of the human genome or transplant surgery etc etc.

There's been a few, some I remember, some I don't.

Berlin Wall
9/11
7/7
Queen dying
The 'Rona

I think, although probably not was was meant by an 'event' considering it's something forever in flux, that the appearance of the World Wide Web has changed the world more than literally anything else in history by an immeasurable margin. The tech was released to the general public on 23rd August 1991, so I'd say that.

The general release of the World Wide Web.

I remember Shock and Awe but wasn't overly worried coz Saddam was an outlier in reality - I remember the Russians getting their arses kicked in Afghanistan - recently the Queens passing was huge but on review I think for me number two was Live Aid and one was the fall of the Berlin Wall - it was started the week I was born and just seemed a fixture forever. I remember being out working sat in a Citroen AX oddly enough outside Leigh RLFC and listening on the radio to reports that made me think " fuck this is it ! As I say I thought it was an immovable East West divide and I was tingling when I got out of the car - will never forget that
I got tickets and went to Live Aid

It sounds ridiculous now , but they decided, pre internet age, to put sales out through National bus network, so you had to buy a coach ticket and concert ticket together. They were £40, - £25 gig, £15 coach fare.

I went down to Middlesbrough bus terminal at lunch time, day of release, and she says 'sorry, just sold out' - then, 'hang on a minute I'll ring Durham for you, (pause) yes, they have loads , how many do you want?'

So we went up to Durham, crack of dawn on 13th July and we still had only the coach ticket, so I said to the driver' have you got the tickets?' And he put his hand in his pocket and fanned out 60 tickets like they were fag packets.

Oh, - and I got arrested at the gig but thats another story, Good day out though
