Most Overrated Player to Play for City

Is there a difference between being overrated and not being as good for us as we thought they would be?

I think a lot fall into the latter description on here.

These shouts won’t be popular, but Kinkladze, SWP and de Jong all fall into the former category more because we rated them more than their ability and output warranted.

Adam Johnson while he was here, looked decent off the bench running at tired defenders but rarely did anything from the start. Obviously his fall from grace means he doesn't get much of a mention anymore.

I thought James Milner was overrated. He tried hard etc but I used to point out every match to my mate sat next to me how much attacks used to break down because of him. That's why he was used sparingly and only on wings.
He went to Liverpool on the premise he was a center mid, within a few games he got moved to full back and then became a super sub.

Good post. I'm not sure on SWP though. I think wingers have it tough because the very nature of their role means they are going to lose the ball a lot. Sweep was unplayable at times. I agree on Kinky. He was marvellous to watch at times but we went down twice with him (not all his fault admittedly). By the end of his time with us, I was a bit tired of the begging for him to stay. If you want to go, fuck off. I've had quite a number of heated debates on this subject over the years.

Agree re the context you give, but as a player he was bobbins and, as they thread asks for, overrated.
He wasn't that bad actually, he had some very good games. He had some great games, one of which was the UCL against Barcelona with the controversial penalty just outside the box...coincidentally, I think he gave that pen away but then again, I still don't agree that it was a pen

I wasn’t trying to say any of them were in anyway bad, just that we may have overrated them more than most.

We desperately needed both Kinkladze and SWP as they were beacons of light in our darkest times.

Your winger point is valid. I’m as guilty of that as anyone as I’m expecting the correct decision to be made at the end of each action, which is obviously impossible. Mahrez was one of the best at that and he was still nicknamed FFS!

Prob won’t be popular but some of the ones I feel where over rated are:

Dzeko - his first touch was abysmal and he would have a great impact from the bench but stink the place out when started.

Grealish - people genuinely thought pep held him back. Thankfully cherki has finally put that to bed. Grealish was not skillful or quick which meant he struggled to routinely beat his man so resorted to passing backwards 90% of the time. Also never seen someone have so many shots blocked.

Sane - had 1 good game followed by 5 awful ones

Adam Johnson - complete match of the day player

I still maintain that Sane had the potential to be world class, it was his head that let him down, not his ability

Difficult question as it depends on definition. Not the same as worst ever or disastrous value for money.

If it was a player that had done well elsewhere but bombed for us I’d say Adrian Heath. 75 appearances as a striker and 4 goals. That’s a goal every 1,687 minutes if he started them all. Think about that.

If it means rated by fellow blues much more than you rated them historically that’s more controversial and subjective. I loved Kinky but he shone in a very bad side so I’ll reluctantly choose him.

Oh yeah and way back when us having two of the four £1m players in England. Reeves and Daley ok on their day but never £1m value. Some may say I’m equating vfm with overrated.
