Most under rated players who never played for City

The majority of the Ipswich Town (late 70-early 80's) team under Bobby Robson never received the recognition I thought they deserved.
They were probably the best league team I have been lucky enough to see live.
In 1981 they should have won the Division 1 title. Aston Villa won the league, but Ipswich did the double over them.
Ipswich were the better team when City beat them in extra time at the 1981 F.A. Cup semi-final @ Villa Park.
So they only had the EUFA Cup to play for. They won it, but did not achieve what they deserved.
City signed the Ipswich goalkeeper, Paul Cooper, later on in his career. The majority of the Ipswich team did leave earlier in their careers e.g. Alan Brazil went to Spurs and MUFC. John Wark left for Liverpool. They also signed two excellent Dutch players in Muhren and Thyssen, when few English teams took the gamble of signing foreign imports.
Doubt if a team with that low an outlay on transfers and such a small (Town) support will ever again be that successful.
Ipswich Town and Bobby Robson were the great outsiders who never received the accolades they both deserved.
They were certainly a great team who could have won more, and a few of them even "starred" in Escape to Victory

David Nish , Leicester player in 60's & 70's , he was a superb defender and Malcolm Allison & Joe were linked with him every season but we never got a deal over the line , he only got about a dozen England caps . But Cloughie recognised his talent and took him to Derby and he fulfilled his potential winning titles and cups , vastly underrated player

Pavel Nedvěd! Never spoken about like Zidane Scholes Vieira Keane Xavi Iniesta Gerrard Lampard are. He was an absolutely fantastic footballer.

Jimmy Greaves. Not just for his goal scoring feats but as my Father says about him “he’s the closest player to Messi that’s ever played the game”. And look at his goal scoring feats haha! Never talked about like George Best is despite being a better player.

A random one - Gareth McAuley. West Brom were a solid Prem team when he played for them. In his final season he got a lot of injuries, played just 12 games, and West Brom got relegated.

And I know you asked for non-City players but I have to mention Sergio Agüero. He’s massively underrated (despite the plaudits he does get). He’s scored more goals in his career than Ian Rush, Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer... of players who’ve spent most of their careers in England, only Jimmy Greaves and Dixie Dean have scored more career goals than Kun.

And look at the quality and difficulty of his goals, some of the angles he scored from, the distance he scored from, the amount of defenders he had in front of him, how many times he found that spot just inside the post where the goal keeper is never getting it, or how many times he hit the top corner...

But not just his goal scoring, his general play has always been brilliant and he adapted his game after Pep came in (some were saying he wouldn’t make it with Pep and be sold!). He’s got the best one-touch play in and around the box in our team, and he’s strong as fuck.

Even among City fans he’s underrated, he’s probably the best and most important player who’s played for us since the takeover, not many talk of him at that level though with most putting David Silva above him (there’s no way Silva is above Kun!).
Agreed. Watched him at Lincoln for 2 years and he was miles better than the lower divisions. Such a dependable player.

was gonna be my nomination, loved watching him as a kid
Me too, he was brilliant. He won very few England caps, he often refused to tour or join squads, but I do remember him destroying West Germany soon after they were 1974 WC Winners. He went over to play in USA when he was only 27.

Really used to annoy me when people said he wasn’t actually good in the air, he’s got more headed premier league goals than anyone else.
I just loved the guy despite that Spurs match back years ago (I had to look it up -- 2010! Wow. Still remember being in a bar in Columbus, Ohio after a work meeting watching that and just being crestfallen as hell).

Matt le Tissier, the FA were woeful ignoring him
Because the English game was fixated with 4-4-2 and Le Tis wasn't a centre forward or box to box midfielder
The God botherer Hoddle was another who should have racked up England caps

Anyway, my nomination goes to Joe Cole
When he wasn't getting a game for Chelsea, we should have broke the bank for him and played him as our central midfield playmaker

The brain cell a few years ago said people not from England should not play for England, so I guess they had it right mostly.

I don't think he considered himself non-English though, just everybody else not from England, except him.

I actually think Shearer is underrated.

Had he signed for Real instead of Newcastle back in 1996 (or even one of the Italian giants Milan or Juventus) back then he'd be talked about across Europe as one of the greatest strikers ever.

I remember the one or two times Newcastle got into the Champions League and one of the Italian legends (maybe Cannavaro) saying he was the most difficult striker he'd played against.

That Ipswich Town team were fantastic. As a kid id marvel at John Wark,a central midfielder who plundered 34 goals in one season,in all competitions. Outstanding.

Brazil and Gates were exciting forwards who dovetailed off big Paul Mariner, the smaller players used to create mayhem with their excellent close control. The Double dutch signings were electric back in the day and their midfield creativity was backed up by a strong backline of George Burley, mick mills,Russell Osman and of course Terry Butcher.

The most under rated player within their ranks, was for me Kevin Beattie .what a player..a rolls royce of a centre half, powerful rugged but nimble and skilful enough to bring the ball out of defence smoothly or play a pin point 70 yard pass.He was a very very good player. If he and Colin Bell could have avoided their respective injuries,Englamd would have had the spine of a very good team.

Every time i see Kevin Beattie,s name...i think back to Villa Park 81 semi final.i wasnt there but listened on radio2....that towering header from a corner was so close to giving ipswich the lead..i shudder every time i watch the highlights of the match on u tube.
Beattie was a player.

I'm fairly certain during his time there they had pretty poor showings in all their Champions League campaigns, although I'm sure he missed most of their first one due to injury.

He could have played alongside the likes Zidane, Seedorf, Raul, Guti etc. instead he chose Gillespie, Batty and Rob Lee (not to mention the ageing Pearce, Beardsley and Barnes).

Speaking of underrated players Guti, what a player he was.

Abou Diaby ,centre mid at Arsenal a few years back was a decent player, tall composed creative, excellent ball control, and hard in the tackle.
If it wasnt for injury he would have made a real impression, but even in the relatively few games he did complete he looked to me to be a top top player.in my opinion, good enough to be talked about on par with Patrick Viera.

At the end of the 69 Final Joe Mercer rushes across to Nish to shake his hand. Maybe he was also making him an offer ?
