Movie Discussion Thread | Upcoming Releases etc..

Fox did Logan they only just bought the rights to Deadpool. They could use hulu but the closest they get to r-rated is Pirates of the Caribbean currently. I think you are referring to companies like Miramax who were also strong armed by their parent company to wind their necks in, Farenheit 9/11 for example. They were told in no uncertain terms do as demanded or Disney were simply not going to release it. They have sold them now anyway. They do own touchstone pictures but i believe the last r-rated film under any subsidiary was 2013.

They have doubled down now though on their family friendly approach as of the last 5 or so years. This has shown no sign of change. Remember Disney now own the rights to Alien, Predator to name a few. It is really these franchises people are worried about. The last Terminator for example was pg-13 and look how that turned out.

My main worry is they make a kick ass film then get cold feet. Dredd 2012 suffered from this badly, a fine film execs decided to bury because reasons. It's brutal and uncompromising style shit execs up and it was passed off to lionsgate to push and promote, quietly. Not sure if it was Disney who did that but that i think is what people don't want to see.
I see on IMDB they have the title for a new Dredd series and a release year of 2019, but can't find anywhere if Karl Urban has said he'll do it or whether they even have a director. I did read it was going to be on Netflix but not heard much about it, thought the film was excellent.

Don't know if any of you are into Asian cinema, i used to watch tonnes of it in my youth. My loft is full of DVD's imported from Japan and S.Korea (no, not porn). Cornerhouse used to do Asian film festivals, that was a great chance to get to watch something on the big screen and once we even had a visit from the director (although i can't remember which film it was now). I watched Onibaba at Cornerhouse for the first time, didn't think so much of it when i was watching it but it really stuck in my mind for years afterwards, an amazing piece of cinematography, B&W really does add something when you wouldn't expect it. They released a B&W version of Mad Max: Fury Road and i feel it looks even better than the colour version.

I am pissed off Kylo Ren has his helmet back in Episode 9. It just goes to show that Johnson a d Abrams did not plotthis thing out before hand

I don't quite know if true or not, but there's talk of Christopher Nolan OR Ben Affleck directing the next two 'JLS' films to finish off Zack Snyder's vision (I think his cut comes out in Aug?) and introduce 'Darkseid' into the mix. The destiny of 'The Batman' may well be decided here, with him being the only mortal in the team.

So, just address this so called rumour I think there's simply NO WAY Nolan will return to the superhero genre. None.

However, if Affleck takes the mantle, I think those two films will look great!

I really like his eye and attach to detail in the writing. Hope this comes true.

The only question remaining will be if he dons the 'Bat suit' and direct.

That WILL be tough!

The time paradox in T2 really bothers me.
I think their angle now is that it is so messed up nobody can coherently say "that is wrong". Because we are all gawping at the pg-13 mess we are served to confused to even speak let alone tell them anything xD

You will not be shocked to hear there is a good reason for that. Google it if you must because this will sound like bullshit... They had no vision for the 3 films at all. With that i mean they thought about and wrote film 1 with literally no consideration for the second or third film. They did a film then thought about the second after and so on.

I am not a proper film buff even i would say. So if i can see what was done with Star Wars being some sort of lesson of not what to do with a franchise at conglomerate management school; The hard core fans must be pretty livid.

A valuable loved established franchise, possibly the most well loved. This was given to a woman who is a hardcore feminist with one objective above all else, push her agenda. How this woman was not pulled up originally and told that she is paid to make good movies, not use her position to do as she was doing is beyond me. None of that belongs in movie production to such an extent. Kennedy took the hard work of others and used it as a tool in a clumsy fashion. It seems extremely reckless at best.

Pretty mad when you think about it from a big business pov.

If this is true I'm giving up on Star Wars

They have kind of done this to themselves killing everyone off. They likely feel they are left with no characters who have any meaning now. They failed to give any of the new ones any sort of arc full stop or fucked it up.

They can rescue it a bit i think with Finn. He could now feel a bit angry with Rose. The next film could see him confront Rose early on and say "WTF, no Luke and you just condemned everyone for a kiss". This could help Rose's character a lot. she could realize how desperately stupid she was and start to re-focus on helping the resistance in an effective manor. Their love arc would be finished, at least for now and you could see these two without the stupid story they were given. You do not have to look stupid bringing old characters back then that would stink of executive interference or panic either.

With DC now i am of the position "lets just see what it's like". They need to sort their act out before people will give them the time of day again really. The numbers for Aquaman i feel just paper over serious cracks. The film it's self was not that good truth be told. Wonder Woman decided to punch it's self in the face for the last 30mins for no good reason either. It would have been great for Diana to realize things are not black and white, you kill the bad guy and everyone sings songs together.

After she thought she killed Ares and the the confusion that beset her, that was a great scene but then... I WILL DESTROY YOU!

Fuck sake! hahaha.

The Star Wars films (7, 8) looked like the film equivalent of a chain story. I enjoyed 7 but felt like I had been had yet again when 8 came out. I didn’t go see Solo in theaters as a one-man protest after seeing every film in the theater dating back to ‘77.

Honestly, the prequels were mostly horrid and left me anesthetized to the point where “bad Star Wars” is almost to be expected.

The silver lining is that what has been done with the MCU has been stellar and to me has eclipsed the sacred Star Wars franchise, taking the sting out of its failures.

Do you remember the first time you saw Iron Man? i saw it almost a year after release because i just thought "meh". Look how that turned out haha. Mad to think IP rights forced them to use Iron Man and the other actors considered for the role. Funny how things turn out. Pretty sure you could never directly re-cast Tony Stark, Tony stark is RDJ and RDJ is Tony Stark.

I still smile when i watch Iron Man and how from the explosion i was like "huh, ok you have my full attention film, do your best". The rest, as they say, is history. I expected very little from the film.

How would you guy's and gals feel about Bucky taking over Iron Man and not taking over cap's position? That would be a pretty interesting story line to get to such a position in the universe. The obvious arc would be a feeling of duty, a debt owed for something he could never repay and to do it to the best of his abilities. A debt that made him need to do that above honour his friend and do the best he can as the cap?

Or is Peter Parker ready to take hold of Stark Industries by the scruff of the neck and show his skills right now? He can't stay a kid in this universe, everyone develops so he has to make a move soon.

Who should take the suit and who should take the shield? Is Parker a right and ready fit to slip into Tony's shoes?
