Movie Discussion Thread | Upcoming Releases etc..

Some big films and TV series have been killed by the negative publicity around the productions because the people starring in it effectively put off a great deal of the viewing public.

Hollywood make some excellent stuff and it would stand up to scrutiny and sell well no matter what the competition is, but it's strangling itself just my opinion.

Yes, I agree and Hollywood is at a crossroads in terms of filmmaking rather than the producing of them. Well, a bit of both, really.

The 'Mary Sue' aspect of films, these days are a problem. The question is if films are a fantasy, in the most part, should it depict women in roles that are an expected generalisation in what they can do or should women be depicted in more 'natural' support roles with the occasional breakthrough in male roles, especially in action.

Are we seeing a reaction to unfamiliarity in depiction? In "Wicked" and "Barbie", these made a billion and more because it depicted familiarity and determination, supported by women. Action stars featuring female leads as 'Boss Babes' tend to bomb completely despite being made to show the women that saw "Barbie" that they could do this too.

So, what's the answer?

I'll use star trek voyager as an example, Captain Janeway is my 2nd favourite Captain ever because she's very good in the part and an excellent actress.

Women should play any part if they are capable of doing so realistically but the real issue isn't the taking part it's the constant tripe they drone on about in interviews wrecking the film before it's released, obviously that isn't all films.

The largest abomination was ghostbusters with Helmsworth as the thick secretary, in the original films the secretary was depicted as the employee with the head to hold it all together and the humour in it was flat even though the cast it had it should have been a lot better because it was a good one.

The Orville was a prime example of a stunning 2 series followed by a smart arsed season 3 that killed it off.

Don't think I really started 'The Orville' cos the writer/ star, Seth McFarlane, was everywhere at the time and I just couldn't be arsed with the overexposure. So, I might have a look at that again.

And, yeah, the problem is today's Hollywood woman feels 'empowered' to speak as and when they want to about anything. Such is 'Girl Power'. Today's men, in that circle, for the most part keep their politics to themselves.

I have seen female content creators, plus and minus the debate of women's roles and statements, clash. Pro women wants to see them empowered on screen while the oppo laughs at the notion of such unrealism! I don't know where they stand!

Both Erivo and Grande from "Wicked" and Zegler and Gadot from "Snow White" have been outspoken, so it's interesting how one made a billion and the other didn't.

I wonder what the difference is?

Not sure why this thread has died off, but anyway it looks like Sony are heading into some physical aspects of the new Spidey film "One More Day" (I think they're gonna alter the canon from the original source) with practical movement on the web swinging!!

Shooting on the streets of Glasgow, as we speak!

See if @Magicpole can sneak in as an extra and a trusty camera!!
