On the tail of Film 4's must see movies, which 5 movies would the good people on here recommend without going for the obvious favorites Godfather, Goodfellas etc etc.

The Big Lebowski - http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0118715/plotsummary
Battle Royale - http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0266308/plotsummary
La Haine - http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0113247/plotsummary
Leon - http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0110413/plotsummary
The Royal Tenenbaums - http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0265666/plotsummary
Lebowski and Leon are in my top ten favourite films. Tenenbaums is pretty good although I preferred Rushmore.

Battle Royale is a lot of fun!

Rushmore is good i just think Tenenbaums is miles better but it could be because it was the first Wes Anderson film i had seen, did not think much of The Life Aquatic been told to check out Bottle Rocket, anyone seen it?

Bottle Rocket is poor compared to Rushmore and Tenaunbams. I agree with you on The Life Aquatic.

Oh, I dunno... Ok, just thinking briefly...

"Grand Canyon" (Great human drama about losing touch)

"The Fly" -1988 (Great transformation, great nutty speeches!)

"The Incredible Shrinking Man" (Awesome special effects for its time)

"Rope" (Severly underrated Hitchcock film. So many nuances and tricky subject!)

"The Fountain" (A brilliantly and beautifully filmed piece of work. The underlying message is very powerful)

bigga is this film a must see ive got it but never got round to watching it???

Did you highlight 'The Fountain", Lee? If so, the cinematography alone is worth watching it for! It's an utter compelling watch, imo. Simple storyline but, complex in its tale. So many thing to take in. You have to watch it, mate and tell me what you think. I regret not seeing it at the flicks.

Once Upon A Time In The West....Jason Robards steals it for me
Once Upon A Time In America.....yes as you can figure I'm a Leone fan
Being There...........
Dr Strangelove........and a Peter Sellers fan
Funny Bones......Lee Evans/Jerry Lewis/Freddy Parrot Face Davies and the legendary George Carl

Now I'm not saying they're classics but then you did say leave out the obvious ones......just ones I love.

yes mate the fountain going to watch in a bit will let you know what i thought cheers.

I like Rushmore but Tenebaums and every other Wes Anderson movie just wears my ass out. Same old shit. Contrived, nihilistic, self important characters farting around....I'll pass.

Some good choices, especially The Big Lebowski. I only recently started watching the Coen brother's films. Fargo, The Big Lebowski and Barton Fink are in my top ten favourite films now.

I would choose...
A Room For Romeo Brass
The Science of Sleep
Withnail & I (not sure if that is classed as 'obvious'...)
Dead Man's Shoes
And I would probably go for a Coen Brothers film or The Royal Tenebaums
