Moving to a new city and starting a new life

was just an example .....

two years ago , after spending a decade living in Belle Vue , i moved to Cheadle Hulme , where i certainly didn't know anyone ...... but i've made a bit of an effort and made one or two friends now , it can be done !

The bloke next door to me is from South London ... he moved up here in 1990 for work purposes , he says didn't know a soul ... he's now married to a New Moston woman and has many friends , he reckons he'd never go back down there now ...... life is what you make it!

Amen brother. Although I'm here most weekends, I haven't 'lived' in Manchester so to speak for 22 years. There are great people and idiots everywhere, we dont have a monopoly on either. The kid in the OP should broaden his horizons, even if it is Solihull.

this very forum has posters who live in those parts , Birmingham and Warwickshire , and i'm sure they could give the OP a few pointers if they spot this thread ....... if it were me i'd just view it as a new challenge ...... and , at the end of the day , if you don't take to it , you can always come back , can't you?

A lot of City fans come further to home games than from the Midlands , so even that doesn't have to be a problem , if you don't want it to be!

There's a reason you applied for the job in the first place. Only you know it. But you took the decision to go when you sent your CV.

Since leaving school after my A levels I've moved 12 times to 5 different countries (6 if you count Jockland). People are the same everywhere. Get out and find the world.

As for your current job. Regardless of how you view your relationship with the boss, when it comes to cash the gloves are always off. Expect no favours.

Get in there and leave your mark. Living and working in a different place can be great if you make friends easily.

Truth is, I'm shitting it. The job is based in Solihull, West Midlands and I'd have to relocate. I don't know a single person there and I know that the Midlands can be grim as it gets, I used to go to Warwick Uni and the thought of Coventry sends shivers down my spine. Even Manchester at it's bleakest does not compare to Cov.

Crazy idea, but since the job is based in Solihull, why don't you live there instead of Coventry?! The West Midlands has a bad reputation and there are a lot of areas in it which are not great, but there are also some very nice places around there. Not something I'd worry about if the job is as good as you say.

well I`m not too far from solihull, the town itself is ok, a bit upmarket, (solihull is the most expensive place in the mids) there are however some truly beautiful parts of rural england within a few mins from there, and some great places to visit for a few beers, warwick, stratford etc. all in all I would rather be down here, would never move back up north again.

At the final interview stage for a job that is, simply, brilliant. Offers me travel throughout France and good career prospects. I had a long telephone interview/conversation on Friday and I've been pretty much offered the job, there's no-one else to be interviewed and I'm going down on Wednesday to seal the deal. I should be excited, right?

Truth is, I'm shitting it. The job is based in Solihull, West Midlands and I'd have to relocate. I don't know a single person there and I know that the Midlands can be grim as it gets, I used to go to Warwick Uni and the thought of Coventry sends shivers down my spine. Even Manchester at it's bleakest does not compare to Cov.

I'd move into a houseshare and I have my sports that I'd try and get involved in down there, I just feel a little overwhelmed at the thought of literally 'starting again' and not knowing a single soul. I've got visions of lonely nights in watching MOTD wishing I was watching the blues in the flesh!

Any tips would be appreciated!

My missus lives in Sutton Coldfield and no doubt I'll end up living down there at some point!

Solihull, like Sutton, is one of the more affluent places in the West Midlands and more Brum than Coventry.

Brum city centre is on the door step (which is a much better place than it's given credit for) and Stratford-Upon-Avon, etc are close by.

Don't really know Solihull that well but I did some work for British Gas a few years ago working out of their office at Blythe Valley, which is just outside. I used to commute from North Manchester (but I didn't need to be in every day)so getting back for games shouldn't be a problem.

The area around there seems quite nice (Stratford, Kenilworth, Leamington Spa) plus it's well placed for getting anywhere on the motorways. One area I do know a bit better is just to the west on the M5/M42 junction around Alvechurch and there are some lovely villages there.

Solihull is a very nice area, so if I were you I'd look around there. A previous poster has, quite rightly described Brum centre as great. The problem with Birmingham was past planning, which gave it a brutalist look, but the centre is brill. The local flange will love you as well.
As stated, go for it!

I've also found the vast majority of Brummies to be very friendly people.
