After 10 years living down South I applied, and was offered a job in Northumberland.

Me and missus decided we wanted a quieter way of life, more rural with hopefully access to beaches, hills and good dog walks. We are really happy where we live so it’s a very difficult decision, to uproot, based on a few enjoyable holidays.

We’ve read up a bit on the area and the area around Alnwick seems to meet our criteria.

Any blues live up there, lived there, know the area well and maybe recommend areas/villages to live, the reality of cold winters and any other pros/cons an outsider might not have considered.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We seriously thought about moving to the North -East, but decided it was too far for our 3 daughters to visit us.
We really liked the area between Sunderland and Newcastle on the North Sea Coast.
Starts at Roker, then Seaburn, then East Boldon and Boldon Collery and up the coast to South Shields.
It's semi - rural, the Metro links iot all together and makes it easy to get to both Sunderland and Newcastle centres. And it's not far from the A1M for easy motorway access.
And the property is cheaper than Manchester.

Only holidayed up there a few times. Found Alnwick a bit too touristy for us. We preferred it a bit further up around Bamburgh and Seahouses.

The whole coast from North Berwick down is beautiful.

Guess it depends on how close you want amenities to you and how far away from others you’re prepared to be.

As we’re 5 hours away currently this is actually a move closer to home and City of course. The travel to home matches is becoming really challenging especially at night. Thanks for the info on the area, the job is based in Morpeth so we will probably be a bit further up but will check out the area if we move.

Yes pal.
I should have simplified it by saying it's basically the North Sea Coast between the River Wear and the River Tyne.
We've walked it many times so know it quite well.
Good house hunting.

Yes agree about Alnwick. We would like settle in a town circa within a 20 minute radius which gives us access to the coast, hills and Alnwick all within 30 mins. Agree about Bamburgh/Seahouses both stunning areas. Missus really likes Beadnell so defo an option.

We’ve seen a couple of towns called Rothbury, Wooler which also gives got access to the hills as I’m into trail running.

Amble is always highlighted as one of the best places to retire to in the UK .
That part of Britain is still criminally underated but it’s definitely getting more attention as people seek more affordable second homes after North Yorkshire. I looked at a two bed apartment in Amble pre COVID for 95,000 ish . It was £180, 000 , two years later.
I’d go there on a heartbeat but the good lady still likes the close family ties .

A colleague of Mrs DD retired and moved to Tynemouth and she absolutely adores it
Wifey visited and said it really is a lovely place

I occasionally travel to Northumberland for work and it’s a stunning county

I don’t know much about Tynemouth and Manclad has spoken about that section of coastline, so cheers both as it’s not somewhere we had previously considered.

I bought a car in Morpeth. I’d definitely be looking for somewhere else to live!

There are so many beautiful spots up there. Can you go up for a week or two and have a recce round?

I've known three people who have moved from Manchester to Northumberland over the last 30 years and they've loved the place, one couple settled in Alnwick ... they've never returned back down here to Manchester to live.

We’ve only been on holiday a couple of times but felt a real connection with the place, hence applying for the job. Biggest fear is coping with the cold and the lack of daylight in winter.

If you really want a quieter, more peaceful and beautiful place to live, do it. I did and love it. You'll thank me. I like expensive Malts. Just putting that out there.

Yes we’ve been to Amble and love that stretch of the coast. Definitely prices are going up and the fear of missing out is definitely driving our urgency to get there. Comparable to where we live and to Manchester you can still get a lot for your money, but it is changing.

Plan to go next weekend for 3 days (not long enough I know). Yes won’t be living in Morpeth. One place which has stood out is Rothbury. Riverside walks, close to Amble and the coast.

Morpeth itself is nice, as is Ponteland, near the airport. Whitley Bay is great if you want to be near the coast.

Yes Ponteland look great but I think you might get less bang for your buck in Ponteland as, from reading up, it’s a bit of a commuter town to Newcastle. It might be too far from the coast for the dog walks.

Yes, Ponteland is quite upmarket. I've worked in Gosforth a couple of times and travelled up the coast. All-in-all it's a great area.
