I've not needed a normaliser for a couple of years now but MP3gain was the best I've used, it works in a different way to most of them and so is very good and bloody fast too.

help!! can't work out how to work mp3gain, any tips greatly appreciated

Quite simple. Use the "Add Folder" icon to add the folders containing the tracks you want to normalise. When you've done that then hit the "Track Gain" icon and it will adjust all tracks to the default level of 89db.

There's other things you can mess around with but the above will work fine.

got it - excellent gadget, ta v much
Tip: if you need to boost/cut a whole album use 'Album gain' so it keeps the tracks at the same vol relative to each other.

What do you use to rip the CDs to mp3 format?

Windows Media Player 11 can do that mate, just play around in the "Rip" settings under Tools -> Options (press Alt to show the menu bar) first to set it to MP3 and select a save destination.

I know, I was wondering because generally these things have a normalise option at the rip stage.

I tend to find songs ripped from older released CD's tend to be quieter than newer ones.

If you're useing itunes, you can nominalise the volume by connecting your ipod and clicking the 'ipod options tab'.
