Thirteen MPs have signed a Commons motion calling for Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish to be knighted.

The motion was tabled by Liverpool Walton MP Steve Rotheram because of what he said was his "outstanding contribution" to British football.

Mr Rotheram raised the issue two weeks ago, on the 22nd anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

The motion said it would be a "fitting tribute" to the families of the 96 fans who were killed.

Earned respect

Dalglish was manager on 15 April 1989, when the Liverpool fans were crushed to death at an FA Cup semi-final.

He earned gratitude and respect for the way he represented the city and club in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Dalglish, now 60, helped ensure the club was represented at all of the fans' funerals and attended many of them in person.

He resigned as manager of the club in 1991, but returned in January, following the departure of Roy Hodgson.

Mr Rotheram was asked by families of those fans killed to put down an Early Day Motion requesting the honour.

The motion, to be published on Wednesday, has been signed by Labour MPs Derek Twigg; Dave Watts; Maria Eagle; Alison McGovern; Russell Brown; Bill Esterson; Stephen Twigg; Luciana Berger; Louise Ellman; Joe Benton and Clive Betts, as well as Conservative MP Therese Coffey, a Liverpool supporter.

Not been a bad few months for arr Kenny, has it?

What could he have done for an outstanding contribution to British football?

Now I'm too young to have seen him play live..

He's generally regarded as the best ever Liverpool player, in an era when they pretty much streamrolled the whole Europe, classed as one of the best Scottish players of all time (not quite the same level of achievement granted0

Won league titles, FA Cups, League Cups and European Cups as a player

Won League titles, (with two clubs) FA Cups, And maybe a European cup as a manager and would have probably won more if it wasn't for the European ban.

Throw into the mix the work he did with the families of the Hillsborough disaster (Attended every funeral and campaigned for the truth to come out ever since) which lead to his mini breakdown resulting in him leaving Liverpool the first time

I'm definately no Liverpool fan, but even I have to admit that he has had quite a big input into the game in this country

Could be worse, I was half-expecting Redknapp's name to crop up along these lines.

just you wait, once he's served his spell as national team manager he'll be knighted

'For Outstanding Contribution to the Envelope Manufacturing Industry'

how about neither?
Would be the better option but they set a precedent by handing one out to Whiskey Nose.

If I had to chosse between the two then it would defo be Kenny over that other Scotts twat from Trafford, who is in a couple of Seasons is gonna fuckin realise how noisy his Blue Neighbours really fuckin are.

it's football ffs. a sport at the end of the day. knighthoods are fucking pathetic

As a player and a manager, the guy won everything you can at club level.

As a person, he gave so much support and time to the families of the bereaved that his own health deteriorated rapidly.

The guy is an absolute legend and the nomination is fully deserved. Really hope he gets it.

What actually warrants a knighthood these days I don't know but for contributions to football, Dalglish is right up there. Hats off for the Hillsborough stuff alone.
