Mr Bates vs the Post Office

Forgive me if someone else has already raised this point....

700 postmasters convicted of stealing money..... at what point would someone stop and think.... 'hang on, we are accusing 700 people of stealing money, as a percentage of total postmasters this is actually pretty high. Maybe something else is going on?'

Its not often that my job title hits the front page of the Telegraph.

Architect of postal scandal demands immunity

"The architect of the faulty Horizon IT system, (Gareth Jenkins) who gave evidence used to convict sub-postmasters, has demanded immunity before agreeing to appear at the public inquiry."
This should be enough evidence to convict him. It’s as though he’s admitting what’s happened, but will only do so if he doesn’t go to prison.

Too late.
He and Anne Chambers are being investigated by the Met.

It's a win,win for the government. Fill the coffers of their bum chum mates in private companies and assassinate the Post Office thus pushing the so called positives for full privatisation.

I see the Lib Dem’s defence of Ed Davy is he relied on what he was told by the PO.

This really speaks to the problem of MPs “with portfolio”, do they actually try and get across any of the detail or just sit with a fancy job title staring out the proverbial window? Leadership is a choice, they chose to lead. So lead.

I have responsibility’s for things in my day job and when someone tells me something I ask questions to validate their thinking and make sure they’ve thought about everything - when I relay what I’m told to my bosses it’s my responsibility to give them accurate information - I can’t later say what I was told wasn’t right blame that person. I don’t need to understand the topic at hand either, often I don’t, it’s just basic common sense.
There’s a useful little write-up in the FT today providing an outline of how the different ministers responsible for the Post Office responded to questions about the Horizon system over time.

Their various responses to questioning are almost identical, all over the course of 25 years and regardless of whether they were Labour, Liberal or Conservative. Fundamentally, I don’t think any of them could be arsed to first initiate and then force through a proper investigation, particularly as it was unlikely to win them many plaudits within their own parties.

Ed Davey, however, does probably come out it worst given that he also claims that he had no idea the law firm he was advising at the time was working for the Post Office during the Court of Appeal case.

I'm currently listening to the BBC podcasts on the affair and one of the independent investigators said the same thing.

You have a level of fraud/theft which presumably is low, then introduce a new system which sees suspected theft/fraud reach a significantly higher level. You'd think someone might make the connection.

The podcast says that when the suspicion that Horizon WAS the problem finally dawned on the Post Office, instead of holding their hands up, they actually doubled down and started dragging their heels, witholding documents and generally reducing cooperation. Anyone who knowingly took part in that should be going to jail.

They've also effectively stolen money off those sub-postmasters who they forced to repay non-existent shortfalls. They're no better than scammers, who would certainly go to prison if caught and convicted.
