I'm not sure about that at all. I actually think the magnificent David Silva cramped his style a bit in that giving the ball to David rather than driving at the opposition defence was generally a better option.
There are a good few examples in the past of him shining when David was injured. Beating Spurs 4-1 in 2017 just before Christmas for example.
