Muffin or Barm

Suppose it depends where you live.

Born & Brought up in Chorlton on Medlock - it's a Balm Cake

Lived near Bury - it's a Muffin (as in Oven Bottom) applies in Oldham too where late OH worked and in Burnley where I have lived.

And just to throw a spanner in the works if you are from (whisper it) Yorkshire - it's a bread cake!

wtf is a balm?

Will this make it easier for our non-Lancashire folk:-

Balm Cake - round and soft (balm another name for yeast used in making it)

Muffin - Round but flatter than a balm cake and not as soft;

Muffin as named by the daft Yanks. To me this is a sponge bun!!

Its always a muffin for me!

It gets confusing down here in anglesey esplly with the wife because she laughs when I say "ill have an egg muffin" or a "sausage muffin" because she says its a stupid name for a bread roll, (I obviously crack the welsh jokes back by saying that a typical welsh person would give directions to there house by saying (in a welsh accent) "you see those 2 houses on that hill, mine is the one in the middle) always works...

But its the same everywhere down here, we was going to a bbq so on the way I stopped at the garage to get some burgers and "muffins" but couldn't find the "muffins" so I asked some stupid woman behind the till "where would I find the muffins love " (whilst holding 2 boxes of burgers) and guess where she sent me....

To the fucking cake stand!
