Muffin or Barm

Whenever I enter a bakery I have to think which area I'm in before I order because where I grew up in south Manchester it was a barm cake, though some people did say muffin. When I lived up near Middlesbrough there were small triangular bread 'fadgies' as well as large flattish circular 'stotties.' In Northwich you don't ask for a chip barm/muffin -it's a 'chip batch.' Now in Calderdale you ask for a white or brown 'teacake,'- in Manchester the only teacakes have currants in. Sometimes I can be stood there for half an hour before chickening out and asking for a Hovis.

I've seen a lot of "stotties" strutting their "fadgies" around town.
