Other parts of the country may call them barms, baps, bread cakes, T-cakes, Batch, cobs, stotties etc, but in Manchester and Lancashire area they are simply known as oven bottom muffins or 'flats'. Mc Donalds and the rest of America may of hijacked the word 'Muffin' to describe some arty farty blueberry bun, but England, Manchester in Lancashire were producing Muffins way before any ex British pats ever settled over there.

Having worked all over the UK, i know that people in Nottingham, Mansfield, Stoke and Derby say 'Cob's. Not here 'we' don't, so i suspect you're an out of towner duck!

A cob is an un-sliced crusty loaf, a barm is what you get your cheese and salad on at the bakers or your egg and bacon on at the side of the road. A bap is a flat tit. A muffin may be a barm but not round here.

Blueberry Muffins are american shit, but english muffins aren't (ie split em toast em put eggs on em) and are much older than any evidence of using the word to mean an oven bottom bread cake or barm. Apparently "have you seen the muffin man" refers to a man who used to sell griddled bread. The phrase barm cake has much older origins, and the insult "barm-pot" probably originated because you don't need a pot to cook a barm. Using muffins to describe barms is just a bastardisation of the english language. Muffins go in the toaster goddamit.

Born in Derbyshire (not derby)and now live in Nottingham and despite coming too Manchester for the past 37 years and trying to educate everyone on what they are called it's sadly fell on deaf ears.
Mum now lives in Middleton and I was shocked no totally dismayed when she asked if I wanted a Bacon ********* last year. I flatly refused until she put it on a COB
