Muffin or Barm

[another generation]

After having spent the past 6 weeks or so in the home territory, I have to conclude that I would, without time to think, automatically ask for a chip muffin.

Strange that once you'd had a skinful of beer in Hull, we went to the chippy for tea and you asked for a chip barm then proceeded to argue with the lady serving about why it was a barm and not a breadcake (the Hull term). Did my victory at Sports Day go to your head?

Must be a Viking thing, with Hull being closer to Norway. Maybe 'barm' is an old Norrønsk name for a bit of round bread with a content of at least 80% air?

Bread cake = muffin.

I am currently composing an e mail to be sent to a company in Leeds Yorkshire and I need to know whether they call it a Barm or a Muffin as I fear that if I put the correct name to it, (one that us Lancastrians/Mancunians know, use and love) they would not understand it as they are thick. A work colleague states they call it a Teacake but that is just silly, any help or advice would be much appreciated.

*lol* But, as I am probably the oldest poster on this website I can speak with authority when I say that since Adam was a lad it has been a BARM. Muffin was a mule and Muffins are an American invention!! IMHO
