BARM

Ponder that New Years day used to be the 31st March in the UK yet even though the "recipe" has changed to the 1st January we still call it New Years day.

Or that February used to have 30 days, but yet we still call it February.

In short the mere fact you think it's a muffin negates your argument entirely.

In neither of your examples have they got rid of the thing that defines it. If they had put less barm (the frothy scum stuff) in then it woukld still be a barm or if they managed to make it rise quicker and baked it earlier it would still be a barm, it cannot be a barm for one simple reason, it doesn't have barm in it any more, If a steak and kidney pie doesn't have kidney in it it's a steak pie. Barm describes an ingredient that used to be in the bread, and a MUFFIN is a yeast leavened round flattish bread,

It has yeast in it, not barm, so it's a MUFFIN

Best chippy in Manchester = Trawlers 2 in Levenshulme - They call it a BARM.
