My 19 yr old Son

I had my 1st body mot a couple week back got my results through and went to see the surgery nurse, she says I'm borderline diabetese, I have to see a specialist, I more or less cut out drinking 4 years ago so I think myself quite lucky in the fact I did, I don't actually no much about it so it will have to be a learning curve, price of food now probably have to go on a diet anyway.

My family have diabetes(I don't) and they lead normal-ish lives, have jobs and children.

Tell him to watch what he eats and if he is drinking avoid drinks with sugar in them.

It could be a lot worse mate, he could have an illness without a cure. That may sound harsh but its the truth so look on the bright side.
My youngest lad is now 15 and has been Diabetic since he was 5 (all kids are type 1). The illness is manageable and in time will become just part of his life. My lad is fully active with football he plays and trains and is a referee. Once he learns to deal with it there are various ways of managing it, my lad does carb counting where he takes so much fast acting insulin (nova rapid) for everything he eats that contains carbs along with a slow acting insulin ( Lantus)taken once a day. There are also Insulin pumps that emit small amounts of Insulin as the day goes along, Scott Verplank the American golfer uses one and lots of girls also do although young lads tend not to with fighting and messing about isn't usually conducive to keeping it intact.
It will be hard at first but there is no stigma and management of it leads to a near normal life. Good luck to him, Pm if you want to know anything and if I can help along with others I will.

Thank you everyone for your messages, I have never looked at food packaging so intently for Carb sugar content. His Diabetes Doc told him that there is absolutely nothing we could have done to prevent this happening, as we have no Diabetes in our family and it can be triggered by a dose of Flu, chest infection or any other ailment. Daniel lives with us and we are all sharing his illness regarding diet, exercise etc. but it doesnt stop me waking up in the night worrying about him, so thanks for all your positive input. Up the Blues. Terry

has just been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. To say we are devastated is an understatement but he has handled it really well, even though he has to inject 4 times a day. Any of you Boys & Girls had any experience with this condition, both myself and his Mum would be glad of any advice/guidance, Thanks! Terry

get the doctor to sign him up for a free perscription card, the diabetes nurse should have already done this or be doing this now.....also make sure that the diabetes nurse registers him for annual eye tests to check for early stage glaucoma

he will also need a annual podiatary test, where they push sharp and blunt objects against his feet to test if he still has feeling in the nerves, diabetes affects the bloods ability to travel to extremeties once it thickens

he will also find it harder to climatise quickly when coming from cold to hot and vice versa, his blood will need time to adjust and he will get an itchy feeling when this happens

shame they havnt invented a patch or something more discreet than the dreaded needle...

certain hi-tech solutions are being developed that will probably make diabetes a problem of the past; and with a bit of luck it'll be before this young man turns 30.

the 'good' thing about diabetes is it's a huge and widely suffered condition, and a lot of work is conducted looking at how to apply a genetic solution - and it's going to happen, only these things take time to fully research, develop, test and bring through clinical trials.

I've been Diabetic since i was 8 - i'm 41 now

There will be a few scary moments along the way, but use it as a reason for you all to lead a healthy lifestyle. there has been some good advice and comments on here already, if you have any particular questions ask away.

Give him my best

My mum has had type 1 diabetes since she was 21 and has had to do the whole injections every day thing. She's in her mid 60's now and apart from maybe having to avoid having Frosties for breakfast there isnt really much she cant do.

My Aunt is dieing because of type 2 diabetes. Atleast my uncle will finally be free :)
