Did I mention I'd been on Eggheads?
In the mid 1980's, I would go to games with my mum's brother and he would often mention that his cousin tried to buy City..... I always just laughed it off as my uncle winding me up!
Yet over the weekend, I saw this post on the MEN's website on the comments section!

<a class="postlink" href="http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereve...r-city-considered-merging-with-united-in-1964" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://menmedia.co.uk/manchesterevening ... ed-in-1964</a>
Around this time in 1964 my Dad informs a chap named Peter Donohue formed a consortium to buy Manchester City Football club. Peter was a property developer and lived on Mauldeth Rd West in Withington near to Parswood Rd. I am sure he had ulterior motives and thank God his propostion fell flat because our great club would not have been been where they are today as the Premier League CHAMPIONS!
However this introduction to another Gary James book looks like an excellent publication once again, thank you Gary you are a great CITY fan!

My mum's mum, Ann (maiden name) Donoghue and Peter's dad were brother and sister. My mum today confirmed he had tried to buy the club (cant believe she never mentioned it before!!). She hasn't seen him since her wedding in the 1950's and doesn't know if he is alive (she said he is around the same age as her, 78) but will contact the one cousin she is in touch with to ask of his whereabouts.

I've PM'd Gary James and he said Peter Donoghue is mentioned in his ''Farewell To Maine Road'' book. If he is still alive, I shall pass on details to Gary!

Well, seeing as decimalisation wasn't around in the 60's, no!

City were taken over 8 years later by a bloke who ran a TV rental shop! The rags were owned by a butcher!
Don't be dissing my 2nd cousin lol!!!!!

I really hope he is still alive so he can tell his story.

Re: My 2nd cousin tried to buy City!!!!!

To be fair Mauldeth Road West has some large Victorian houses towards wilmslow road, in fact I know Georgi Kinkladze lived in one during his time at City.

Yes, I cover the story in Farewell To Maine Rd but also in my new book "Manchester The City Years" (page 253). I quote Donoghue on that page. Basically he led a group of rebel shareholders who thought City were too backward in their thinking and they issued a ten point plan to 'save City'.

They wanted Albert Alexander and the rest of the Board to resign. They believed they were too old fashioned in their running of the club.

Ultimately, they agreed to work with him to help City develop and a few months later Alexander had appointed Mercer and the rest is history.

The Butcher you refer to was as corrupt and dodgy as they come.

The TV rental bloke was not as bad and actually started out selling sheet music and records before branching out into domestic appliances.

He was worse IMHO

Seconded.

Didnt he take over his dads fishmonger shops before he went into electrical rentals and goods with his mate?

So it was all down to a member of my family then ;)
