Victoria Cricket Club have been informed of proposed changes to the amount Craigavon Borough Council will charge for cricket facilities in 2012. With 21 scheduled home matches, as well as practice sessions, this would see a 675% increase for Victoria, on what they were charged in 2011.
We now have grave concerns about the future of Victoria Cricket Club, and the continuation of a 58 year old club.
Lurgan Park was donated to the people of Lurgan and cricket has been played in the park since the 1920s where Victoria have been based for about 20 years, having previously played on other council facilities since their formation.
We have deep concerns about the sudden increase in cost. Our members open up the facilities on practice nights and match days, and are responsible for cleaning the changing rooms and pavilion after every home match. This negates the need for a paid member of council staff when we use the facilities.
To try and comprehend the huge increase in cost, we requested to see the costing. Unfortunately, we were told that it was not a simple costing exercise.
We hope that this situation will be resolved, as as things stand, Victoria Cricket Club will not be able to play cricket on council facilities next season, and we have always believed that the presence of the cricket club within Lurgan Park was a benefit to the park. Unfortunately, this benefit may come to an end and Victoria Cricket Club may cease to exist.
