My Cricket Club might die

that's bad news, will sign when on a laptop rather than phone

we're really lucky here that Helsinki council encourages cricket, so we've actually been given money rather than paying it. That never happened when I played at home

Thanks for the support Lads, the club about ten years ago had to scrap our seconds, but since then we have worked tirelessly to improve to such an extent that we now have three sides competing in league cricket each weekend and have had a colts cup side for under 18's many of which also play for the saturday sides.
We have managed to increase our sponsorship over the last three or four years, but with the added costs for insurance etc, much of this is eaten up and as it is a council facility we do not have the option of selling drink etc to raise funds, we try as many ways as possible to keep our costs down while still improving our facilities and practice equipment and to play hard but fair on the pitch, but if this increase goes through, then we will simply not be able to continue in the park, and with the lack of other grounds about we will probably have to fold.

The local media have been informed and our secretary is due to be on BBC NI radio at lunchtime tomorrow, the local paper has said that it will be "going big" on the story this week and we are still hoping that the News Letter (one of the biggest circulation papers in Northern Ireland) will run with the story before the weekend to increase the pressure on the council to either reduce the charges or to at least try and justify how they can charge so much more than previous seasons.

Nice one - good luck - if you haven't already done so, contact all the other clubs in the league. They wont want you to fold as they will want to play against you - ask for their support and get them to contact their councillor....... lots of letters telling them their vote depends on this issue will see them changing their minds

Update for anyone interested (& Thanks for the words of support and for those that signed the petition)
At the meeting of the Council's Leisure Sub-committee the proposed price hike was out voted after a lot of pressure on local councillors by various sports clubs (not just Victoria Cricket Club), the committee are looking at the pricing structure again, and this time will consult with us before deciding on how much we ought to be paying.
We have a committee meeting on Monday evening when we will be arranging our "plan of action" things like reminding the council of what they do for us, what we do with regards to the maintenance of the facilities and the benefits to the local community, and how much we feel we should be paying.
The amount of support we have received from the local community, the cricketing fraternity and the wider sporting world in the local area and from further afield has been really welcome and has boosted the morale of the members, so once again, thanks all.

Well done lad. There is nothing more depressing in this day and age than hearing about local clubs and teams having to fold because of extortionate costs.
