10/ Michael Brown QPR away 1995:
Ten minutes into his football league debut and Brown launches into a ridiculous lunge on an unsuspecting opponent
Last spotted in a Port Vale shirt launching into a ridiculous challenge on an unsuspecting opponent
9/ Nicolas Anelka: Arsenal away 2004:
It takes a special talent for somebody who has never won a 50-50 in his life, to score a goal and get sent off for violent conduct before the opposition have even kicked off.
8/ Trevor Francis: Everton home 1982
Younger supporters won’t recognise the days before mobile phones and instant messaging, but we spent the whole game booing the Everton goalkeeper, only to discover when we got home that Francis had deservedly been sent off for headbutting their centre half.
7/ Richard Dunne: Boro away 2008
Now I’m no expert on pre-match team talks, but I’m fairly certain than it would have been something along the lines of
“Nothing stupid and we qualify for Europe via the fair Play League”
6/ Christian Negouai: Everton away 2005
Only played about 3 games for City, but somehow contrived to score with a Maradona handball, miss a drugs test, rupture his ligaments, and receive two red cards. I await the Chappy interview on City TV.
5/ Mario Balotelli: Dynamo Kiev home 2011
In Europe, you don’t even dream of raising your foot above knee high. Nice of Mario to put that theory to the test.
4/ Andy Morrison: Fulham away 1999
Hands up if you would have preferred our resident hard man to have simply chinned Collymore and plead guilty with no remorse.
3/ Joey Barton: Spurs away 2004
Ironic that our most iconic game in the FA Cup and the Premier League have both featured a red card for Joey Barton. Funny because I still can’t see his problem at White Hart Lane.
2/ Neil McNab: Huddersfield away 1988:
Fondly remembered for the “Crutches incident” in the moments that followed. Nowt so funny as the Police wading into the main stand at Leeds Road, looking for somebody with a leg in plaster.
1/ Neil Pointon: United away 1992:
My favourite red card of all time, if only because I could see it coming. It was also a major turning point in the game (and to be fair to Giggs he admitted it recently on Sky TV.
I witnessed all of these red cards and if I’m honest I think Negouai should be higher, if only for the comedy element.
