My touchstone from Saturday is the FA Cup Final 1981

I remember waking up in the middle of the night dreaming about Kevin Reeves shaking his fist as spurs kicked off after he made it 2-1 and saying "come on" .......dreaming City won the Cup......then realising the game was really finished and Spurs had already won 3-2.....:(

The nearest equivalent was the 2013 FA cup final where the players didn't turn up, but this year we are League champions which for me will always out rank chumps league.

I said this in another post somewhere and tacked on Luton bastard Town in 83 as the next worst feeling, if not actually even worse than 81 tbh, David Pleat skipping across our turf chasing prostitutes in his head no doubt.
I was at both 81 finals and Luton in 83.
Was gutted after Spurs match (my brother reminded me that I sat down on the terrace and bawled my eyes out after the replay).Should have won the final on the Sat and played our part in a classic game for the replay, can't say either really apply to last night!
Luton was infinitely worse than 81 and the CL final, I was in denial for a while afterwards as I genuinely couldn't believe City could actually get relegated (had to get used to that feeling over the next couple of decades).
Pretty sure we also had to endure Pleats ridiculous rampaging buffalo/war dance routine on the opening credits of Match of the day for what seemed like ages afterwards(it was probably only the following season in truth though).

It's been emotional. I'm back home now after what feels like months of rising tension and hassle as we jumped the hurdles one by one: the semis, the location, the flights, the hotels, the tickets, the tests, he paperwork, the cash...there was so much skin in the game, and such excitement out there in porto: for us old school blues this felt like it was going to be the end of our journey.

Karma bit us. This team has been delivering on the big occasions consistently. We haven't had a "big"'loss like this for a long time. I've been searching my memory for another game that hurt in the same way and all I can come up with is the Spurs final of 1981. I was only 11 but the feeling of expecting joy and being left with despair never left me, and I think most blues of my generation have never forgotten how that felt.

This was the modern day equivalent. A gutting defeat.

But this time is going to be different. I have total confidence that this team with this manager will lift this trophy in glorious fashion next year (1955 anyone?),
Or the year after, or very soon. It's coming.

This is just part of Manchester City's wonderful history. My faith is intact.
Bang on the money this well written summary. St Petersburg here we come!

Yes, and those awful cream shoes!

I understand what you mean. The cup final loss in 81 will stay with me forever
This one was a starter. Yes we lost due to poor team selection,
However I’ve just got home after an absolutely fantastic two days with a good bunch of lads and my 17 year old son who loved every minute, his first euro away abroad
The video clips of him bouncing around on Friday are priceless

His worst day was the Wigan cup final (doesn’t know he’s born)
We will be champions of Europe sooner rather than later

Yup. That 1981 final stayed with me far longer than this one will. When I got back from the first game I told my, then, girlfriend, now my ex-wife, with no hint of melodrama, that if we could dominate a game to that extent and only draw thanks to an incredibly unlucky own goal, we were never destined to win anything. And, in the event, "never" did turn out to be a long, long time.

This is different. There is so much to look forward to and they do say "it's better to travel in hope than to arrive".

They don't show Pleat running twice as fast in the opposite direction pursued by half a dozen cool cats

Top post Dave and 100% agree with what you say.

We dust ourselves down, learn and come back stronger under the guidance of Pep. Cant wait for next season already
