Rags to riches? The man went to two different independent schools, but because he started out in a comp, that's apparently rags to riches. There's this idea that any immigrant that isn't a billionaire is somehow underprivileged. It's bollocks. I remember reading a statistic that the kids of African immigrants are far more likely to study medicine, and I was thinking, "Of course they are. Half their parents are already doctors." Most immigrants from outside of Europe are comfortably upper-middle class in their own country. I think it comes from this American idea where everything has to be seen through the lens of race, so we end up with the absurd situation of congratulating a billionaire for overcoming the barriers in his life to become the first Asian PM, and are treated to a cabinet that is one of the most diverse in history in every sense except which school you went to and how much your dad earned.
