Name a politician

Honestly, there’s probably very few politicians who I would dislike on a human level. Most of them are amiable and personable, that’s often how they get where they are. The ones I’ve met in person are generally just quite normal and nice people. Even the Tory ones.

That doesn’t mean I agree with their politics or think they’re competent.

People in this country are very quick to paint politicians as cartoonish villains who are out to get them at every opportunity totally lacking any nuance or appreciation of the fact they are just creatures of their environment, like we all are. The fact is that people are complex, go figure. It is possible for somebody to just be wrong on something without that making them the literal antichrist.

Everything is so hyperbolic these days. Everything is total shit all the time, and everybody is shit at everything and there’s never any valid arguments or counterpoints from the other side, anybody who disagrees must be a **** - that’s the only reasonable explanation. Social media has totally fried our brains.

I refuse to engage with it, it’s exhausting.

Spot on

Obscure one from the perspective of this forum, but I really like Ferat Koçak who is a member of the German parliament for Neukölln in Berlin. Really committed and hard-working MP, despite repeated attacks on him and his family by far right extremists who tried to burn down his home in one incident.

Paddy Ashdown always seemed like a decent bloke.

I've found that a lot of politicians that retire off and do other things tend to be pretty decent people in the most part, I wasn't a fan of Micheal Portillo as a poltician but really seems like a decent person on that train show of his.
