Name Your Three

Bergkamp
Koeman
Ballack

All in their pomp, one in each line.. go something like this

Hart

Richards/Zab Koeman Kompany Clichy

De Jong

Yaya Ballack

Silva

Aguero Bergkamp

Diamond formation.. Silvar roaming, Bergkamp dropping in when Silva roams, Yaya and Ballack steaming forward. Koeman on free kicks. Awesome

Mmm. Great question! I will confine myself to players I have seen in my lifetime (whether live or on tv). That excludes quite a few true greats who I've only really seen on the highlight reels.

Also, one can't really answer without some consideration of our weaknesses. I think they are (1) lack of top class ball playing centre back (2) deep lying playmaking midfielder (3) top class wide player (4) top quality "big man" up front.

That's four weaknesses, so one of them will have to go unremedied. Anyway, I'll go for:

Alessandro Nesta - absolutely superb central defender who would really help our CL chances.

Fernando Redondo - the Real Madrid version, not the AC Milan one! Wonderfully skilled midfielder, great passing, very underappreciated due to his fated spell at Milan. Would be superb sitting in our midfield and dictating the game.

Christian Vieiri - we all know how much we've struggled at times when the two midgets have been up against a packed defence. This guy was just an animal, an unbelievable striker - great in the air, but monstrously quick and agile for someone of his size. Would be the ultimate battering ram to break down a packed defence. Away from home he would also be great and would have a field day against the lower half sides that we sometimes struggle to get results against when they're putting themselves about and getting in our faces away from home.

Vieri is an epic shout. Immense player in his day, I remember him once hitting a ball so hard that it popped. Great left foot on him.

Yeah, monster of a left foot, and his goal record is unbelievable. Dread to think what Vieri in his pomp would have done to PL defences of that era. He would have had his way with them something rotten.

What I like about him is that he was a big bully of a target man, but also had a deft touch and was mobile. Deadly combination - a bit like a better version of Drogba as his goal record was better and (IMO) achieved, in the main, against better defences (and playing for, on average, worse teams). Just a shame he was so injury prone.

The whole of football history to pick from and you put David Luiz in defence

Because I like to look forward.

Youre also the man who said Richards and Ned at centre back are better than Kompany and Lescott so maybe we can just discount your opinion.

Cracking player

I was in Rome in 97 when England drew 0-0 with Italy to qualify for France 98, I remember Vieri with a back post header in the 88th minute, it was like slow motion going through the air with our hopes depending on it, luckily it just clipped the post and went wide.

Every defender must of hated playing against him, a talent both in the air and on the ground.

I never said that, I said Ned is better than Savic.
