Neil Young - 17th February 1944 - 3rd February 2011

Always seemed odd to me that this great player was sold to PNE (no disrespect intended) at the age of 28, only 2 1/2 years after winning the Cup for us. I know he was out of favour with Allison in 71-72 but come on, Preston ?
He did next to nothing at Preston so maybe it was the right time to move him?

I think that his lifestyle had caught up with him by the time he was transferred. He was smoking 20 to 30 cigarettes a day even when he was playing. It was a real shame that he was unable to stay with City for what should have been the peak of his career.

This is a repost from a couple of years ago.

Neil Young was screwed over big time with City not giving him his deserved testimonial. I think it was Alison who promised it to him when he sold him to Preston.
Neil was a great guy and I couldn’t believe it when his son Mark joined my class at Lane End Primary school in Cheadle Hulme. We became very good friends and Neil would take us fishing up at Alderley Edge. Eventually, Neil had to sell his house and moved the family away to Handforth as he was really struggling working at Topps Tiles. A sad story on how a City legend was treated, but for me I cherish the memories of him to this day.
