Just watched “Dead to me” (2 series, with a 3rd on the way) and “Unorthodox” (a stand alone 4 episode mini-series), both on Netflix.
“Dead to me” stars Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate, and is billed as a black comedy, but feels more like a drama series, albeit with an increasingly farcical number of coincidental/interlinked set plays. Story line is based upon the premise of Cardellini befriending Applegate after the latter’s husband gets run over and killed whilst out jogging, but it turns out Cardellini has an ulterior motive for her kindness. Well acted by Applegate in particular and pretty watchable. Gets slightly irritating in season 2 as the coincidences start to mount up, but still a decent 7/10 job.
“Unorthodox” is about a young Hasidic Jew in New York, who one day decides to do a runner on her ultra-conservative and restrictive community and husband. She flees to Germany and tries to start a new “normal” life, but her husband’s family track her down and try to force her back to NYC. Not overly exciting, but based on a true story and an interesting look at an habitually closed community, plus Shira Haas is a riveting watch as Esty Shapiro in the lead role. Partly in English, partly in Yiddish with sub-titles. Again a 7/10 job and worth watching.
