New Car v 2nd hand

I wouldn't buy a new car - even the Skoda. Get an ex demo or hire car - less than a year old and low mileage. You save thousands off the new price and a premium valet makes it just like new.

Are you fixated on a Phaeton if you buy a used car?

I just bought a 2009 Passat 170 SEL, it's fkn fantastic. 60k miles, fsh, still feels as if it is brand new, paid £8400 for it.

What I really wanted was a Passat CC, don't know if you have seen them, they are higher end, sleeker, look the dogs danglies, and you could get one a year old for about 12-14k I think, well worth looking at, VW's are a great buy.

Yes I am fixated on the Phaeton I think and was hoping to show this thread to the missus to show what a fucking great idea it is.

It's double glazed - enough said

If anything goes wrong on the Phaeton - and there are millions of electronic gizmos - you are in for a fortune. Ditto if it goes anywhere near a VW garage, where only master technicians are allowed to touch it. But if you don't, non-VWsh will make its free-fall depreciation even worse.

Agree with those who say go for something a year or so old. Let some other fooker take the initial hit. It doesn't have to be boring; you could get something pretty decent on your budget.

The Phaeton would be a vanity choice and only OK if you've got money to burn.

lot of good deals to be done 2nd hand, even through the official manufacturers who normally have their own registered 2nd hand section where you can see approved 2nd hand cars of that manufacturer.

Obviously if you don't do your homework you could end up with a pup, but if you do then you can land yourself a really good car that would be miles above what you can get new.

Morley wife..

When are you buying it from, is it a dealer or private ?

If its a good example and it has been serviced at a main dealer, buy it.

Go for the new one - its great getting a brand new car - you're fortunate enough to be able to afford it so go for it. If you're planning on keeping it the rapid early depreciation won't really matter.

That Phaeton will be worth about £5k in three years and things might start going wrong - expensive things. Skoda do a five year warranty for an extra £500. - works out at £2 a week. So you could be paying out over a grand for the engine management unit and a turbo on the VW whereas the Skoda still has 2 years of cover left.

Then the wiper motor goes, then the central locking starts playing up, then the on board computer goes tits up ............

Parts for luxury cars are luxury prices - everything seems to be three times the price of a similar part for a family car. Was quoted £78 +VAT for a replacement wing mirror for my Range Rover - not the whole thing just the glass!
Slightly off topic but if you've still got the Range Rover I've found a cracking R.R. breakers in Brinnington. Complete wing mirror including housing cost me £30. PM for details.

I have an oldish car that needs replacing.

Now my budget is £15,000.

As an old fart I have narrowed it down to
A) brand new Skoda Octavia (yes I fucking know) or
B) after watching fifth gear the other night a 3 year old Vw phaeton 42000 miles 3 litre turbo diesel and nearly £50k brand new.

Anyone had any experience maintaining a second hand luxury car and the pitfalls?
After research it costs about £250 a tyre and servicing about £350. Tax £480. Economy for diesal not an issue.

Any similar thoughts or experiences?

** balls thought I was in the cellar - mods please move (scary I am even driving)

anyone who spends £15,000 on a car and is not very rich is a fool to be honest

Buy yourself a two year old Audi A6, A4 or BMW 3 series for between £15k and £17k
Stick a private plate on it and it's job done

I bought a two year old A6 for £15,500 with 30,000 on the clock. Three years and 70,000 miles later it still looks a great car and only car buffs have any idea that it's 5 years old as it has my "C17Y RJ" plate on it
