Audi A4 1.8 T on a 02/03 plate cost you about 5k

Turbo petrol engine? Newborn baby, economy.

Nice car don't get me wrong, but that is a suspect recommendation.

Petrol of course you bore : )
and what is suspect about an Audi???

I don't mean Audi is suspect but he will never be away from Esso.

The petrol turbo engine in Q generates 150bhp. If he gets a diesel equivalnet he will ge the same performance and save a fortune on fuel.

I have owned innumerable cars over my 30 odd years of driving. The best car I have owned by a large margin is a Golf TDI, superb in every department.

Honda Accord Estate

These are really roomy inside, reliable, superb drive, super efficient and over engineered so it will run for years.

However whether you can get one for 5K, i dont know.

My cousin is a mechanic and he tells me that they are the best car on the road.

My mate bought one in the late nineties from a bloke he knew ..... it had 200,000 miles on the clock !

Almost ten years later and it's still takin' him to Devon and back every year!

The new ones are better than any BMW estate and any Audi. Wont be long before they are the same price!

I would go for japanese for cheap to drive and reliability

lol........Jap cars cheep, what planet are you on??.....insurance well expensive as parts are costly and dealer dont have discounts like your ford, vauxhall and vw's. Jap cars are the most expensive cars in the uk for like for like.

I didn't actually say those words Robbo ... gman 07 did , if you look back.

Whilst i do agree that some Japanese cars aren't cheap to buy or run it all depends on which car you're talking about ...... of course the likes of Lexus and Honda aren't cheap in most aspects , but Corolla and Yaris etc don't offer bad value for money ........ especially the used ones!

You can get some cracking deals with them .... even used Hondas.

I never really found getting parts for japanese cars much problem either ..... as most private taxis now appear to be japanese makes (Primera/Avensis etc) , scrap yards and garages supplyin' parts etc are springing up all over the place ...... main dealers though can be expensive and a bit widespread , i agree.

And in the main they are reliable ...... i've just got rid of a 1996 Corolla ...... i never had one single mechanical problem with it durin' the 5 years that i had it ........ didn't really break the bank in fuel either!

Oops wasn't aware that it was such a big difference between England and Sweden when it comes to Japanese cars... in sweden its very easy to find parts cheap and great deals on both new and used cars... and they are very low on fueleconomy and that i think is the same in both countries.. Insurance is no difference in sweden depending on where the car is from... and besides if you buy a japanese car you would be hard pressed to find any mechanical faults... ten years running now Toyota has been the car with less mechanical faults in sweden... they are reliable in that where ever you buy it... its not only the the price that makes a car cheap or not... its how well it gets along that will make it cheap to own or not price is a small thing when you compare it to what it costs to own (insurance, tax, fuel, mechanical faults)
