Champions League Draw - 29th August '24 | Opponents (pg69) | Fixtures (pg128)

Sounds open to being fixed.

You play 8 random teams (4 at home and 4 away) - you could get drawn v the 7 best teams in the competition with the 4 away games looking like Real Madrid, Bayern, Arsenal, Liverpool.

Some other **** gets a piss easy 7 - the likes of Maccabi Haifa, Rosenborg, Young Boys, the rags etc.
It’s seeded

That cannot happen , the teams are still split into 4 pots like before and u get drawn one from each pot home and away to make it sort of fair ! Same rules apply about teams from the same country and teams from countries that are at war .

The draw will be made by computer and verified independently by Earnst and Young.

I hope that means UEFA will skip all the pre draw bullshit and just press the button.

Hi,
This coming season the Champions League group stage will be replaced as described below:

Under the new format, teams will play eight matches in the new league phase (former group stage). They will no longer play three opponents twice – home and away – but will instead face fixtures against eight different teams, playing half of those matches at home and half of them away. To determine the eight different opponents, the teams will initially be ranked in four seeding pots. Each team will then be drawn to play two opponents from each of these pots, playing one match against a team from each pot at home, and one away.

The results of each match will decide the overall ranking in the new league, with three points for a win and one for a draw still applying.

The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while the teams finishing in 9th to 24th place will compete in a two-legged knock-out phase play-off to secure their path to the last 16 of the competition. Teams that finish 25th or lower will be eliminated, with no access to the UEFA Europa League.

Just wondering what people on here think of this new format. There are more games than the previous model. City should be finishing in the top eight so two more games than previously. It does not seem clear if there will be a benefit for finishing as high as possible rather than just scraping into the top eight.

I think that the changes will improve the Champs League as a competition but the extra games and competition may be detrimental to domestic competitions. Change is needed as some of the group games (in general rather than just City specifically) have been pretty dull.

Thoughts?
And yet UEFA, which has introduced (if my maths is correct) 64 more games into the European calendar via these changes, is challenging FIFA over the summer Club World Cup.

FIFA were right to call them out as hypocrites.

There's already a thread for this that been going since May, do keep up! :-).

it will be known as the BLUE route ( for City ) and the RED route ( for utd )

It sounds like bullsh1t to me. You play 8 games to eliminate only 8 teams out of 32?? I can imagine there will be all sorts of dead rubber the last two games and everyone is going to complain. Imagine if City, or any big club for that matter, are assured top 8 after 6 games. Would be tempted not even showing up!!

Under the old way, yes there are some dead rubbers in the group. However, you tend to get some real drama especially on the groups 6th and last game!!
