New CL Format Thoughts | After GW2 (pg13) | GW3 (pg33)

Too many games. If they did this new format but reduced the number of games to the original format then I’d be happy with that.

Too many games. And probably another play off game. It’s what UEFA and the clubs want. More games. More revenue. The European Super League has arrived, via the CL back door.

I think it’s a dreadful format. It's a CL night and I'm not watching it, probably for the first time ever when I've not made other plans. No real jeopardy. TV can spin it all they like, but Real Madrid will make the top 24.

The old format was fine. The problem wasn't the format but seeding the draw so heavily so as to make it virtually rigged.

Not sure how the format in this stage makes it any different to watch compared to the group stages of the previous format?

I like the new format, more jeopardy in the earlier rounds :0)

Not 2 games against the same poor team or just win your home games and you are through??

More new places to visit and travel to Bratislava :0)

If you are any good?? You should make the playoffs, our problem is that this season we aren’t very good and may struggle to make the playoffs :0(

In the previous format, you might have had a group that was very competitive - Newcastle last year, for example. This format gives a team loads of scope to lose matches. In the end, the final game day might end up with teams contriving a result on the Wednesday because they know what's needed after the Tuesday. The real jeopardy would be if it was just the top 16 through and 20 out. No second chances.

All of the games on the final game week are on the same day(Weds 29th Jan) and kick off at 20:00

I'm not sure it is jeopardy. It's 8 games to eliminate just 12 out of 36 teams. Sure, there's the extra playoff round but that's a different phase of the competition. It doesn't feel like jeopardy to me if you aren't eliminated after the 8 group games.

Like I said, the issue with the old format was the seeding that made groups comically easy. The format of the top two going through in a group of four was fine.
