New CL Format Thoughts

Rugby League award a league leaders shield at the end of the season. There is then a play off for the teams in the top 6 to go through to the grand final which is the main title. They could do the same which would make the league stage more competetive.
Liverpool would do a parade for it

They should give a trophy and shit tonne of money to the team that wins the league stage. That would make the top clubs go for top spot.
Don’t some leagues already have a ‘half way through the season trophy’ where clubs play the same teams in the same order in the second half of the season.
That doesn't work with the fact that teams only play a selection of other teams in the league, it would be farcical to award anything when a team could have an easier set of games than anyone else.

EDIT: But hold on ... "farce", "UEFA" ... it'll probably happen.

The old format had a total of 96 games in the group stage and at the end of all that, 50% of the participants (16 out of 32) were eliminated. The new format has a total of 144 games in the league phase and after they are all played, only 33% of the participants (12 out of 36) are eliminated.
The new setup just feels bloated and ungainly with less jeopardy than we had before. I've said elsewhere that there will still be seeding to play for in the last games amongst teams that have already qualified but I'm not so sure that's going to be such a huge factor now.
UEFA's primary goal seems to have been to substantially increase the total number of games so they can sell an enhanced 'product' to the broadcasters.

Roll the clock back 20 years and City would have loved more places to be available to clubs like ourselves to be part of the Champions League.
Now we are top table regulars we don’t hold the same view. We just want to get to the quarter final stage as quickly as possible.

Only if you count the post-league play-offs as part of the knock-out phase. Otherwise 20 of 36 teams are eliminated, 56%.

Anyone's mind changed now?

They've made the worst part about the old format even worse in my opinion. I watched last night but each cheer was a bit half-hearted.

I'd be interested to see the revenue clubs are getting and whether that outweighs the negatives.

Probably great for the revenue of all clubs involved but I think for the bigger clubs (top 16), the negatives surely outweigh any positives?
It’s too early to tell for me. We had zero jeopardy in the group phase of the old system and probably zero in this.

Once we’re 5 or 6 games in and the league has taken shape, then I’ll get a feel for how the new system is working.

Goal difference is the only element that doesn’t sit right as teams don’t play the same teams. How you’d differentiate teams on the same points otherwise would be hard though. Maybe on the average coefficient ranking of the teams that you’ve played?

Dont even know where or what the table looks like, havent bothered to check? we good or nah?

When one of the favoured teams gets knocked out on goal difference, they'll think of a way to change it

Yeah, probably, although it’s pretty hard not to qualify for any of them. Maybe finishing 9th and having the extra round.

I can see a world where they move to 4 groups of 9 teams, still 8 matches, still 4 away 4 home but at least everyone in the group has played the same teams. Narratives are easier to build as well.

I know that then means 9 gameweeks with 1 rest but I can see that being the direction they go in.

It’s a hell of a lot of extra games solely to eliminate the 12 worst teams, 4 of which previously would not have been in the competition, and in truth aren’t needed now!
Yes spot on, we all know why extra teams and games were added. There is whole lot of cannon fodder who are getting humiliated in 8 games instead of the normal 6, how is that helping them?

I think they've duped us again. Telling us that we had meaningless matches and this would remedy that. Lets face it, its a mass dilution of the CL format so the bigger (Now struggling teams) can still go further, with more games, into the competition. Whilst at the same time preparing us for a euro league in future.

Thats my thoughts on why they would come up with such a convoluted format that boggles the mind and needs a computer to do the draw. They are always doing things through the back door.
