Forgot you had been on Eggheads!Don’t be so pedantic! ;)
Cheers mate32 teams.
Everyone plays 8 games against 8 different teams
4 home and 4 away
Top 8 automatically go through to last 16.
Teams 9th to 24th in a play off game. The 8 winners join the other 8 in the last 16.
Play off games are
9th v 24th
10th v 23rd
11th v 22nd
Etc
It’s not even a cup competition though is it? Not till March anyway. Not worthy of me commenting really as I don't particularly like the competition. Bit like all cup competitions, it's only interesting in the latter stages. It's all built to ensure the big teams make it through and most of the public who watch it on telly want that. They all want Real Madrid, City, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Barcelona etc, etc into the quarters and semis.
Is that not exactly like the Premier League? Win 5-1 on week one and you’re right up there. Lose the next game 7-1 and you drop to mid-table. A league format isn’t difficult to understand.Fuck this, celtic went from 2nd to 20th after 1 game....
Still shit, not sold fuck off those who pushed this thru
Alphabetical order ?What happens, if after 8 games, two teams placed 8th and 9th are locked on the same points and goals for and against, plus they didn't play each other, which team goes straight through?
Still got 7 other games to recover from any hiccups . It will still be the usual suspects qualifying in first 8 places. The fact it's now a one off fixture means these wins really count for something in the overall scheme of things.
They wont just be cancelled out in a return fixture like they nearly always used to be, with Bayern & Real ending the group stages ahead via superior head-to-head dominance.
No, teams on 3 points like Madrid and Bayern, have 6 games to get another 14 points not much room for error.Still got 7 other games to recover from any hiccups . It will still be the usual suspects qualifying in first 8 places.
Not sure but I guess it would go on the club's coefficient rankWhat happens, if after 8 games, two teams placed 8th and 9th are locked on the same points and goals for and against, plus they didn't play each other, which team goes straight through?
8 different teamsThe only positive for me is playing 7 different teams rather than having the obligatory boring 2 games with the usual suspects.
I still have doubts over how the computer draws the teams and the algorithm involved.
You missed the biggest negative, a bad game for a top side in the old format gave one of the minnows a chance of progressing, with this format it's almost irrelevant. Just another way of maintaining the status quo. What did you expect?
The formats strengths and weaknesses are really clear. We get more unique games instead of drawing the same teams every year, there’s a much better chance of smaller teams getting into the last 16, and there should be some last-day-of-the-season bedlam across the last few match days.
The negatives are more games against weaker opposition and the longer format means it’ll take longer to get interesting.
We won’t really be able to assess this format for ~5 years, when there’s been a chance for those weaker teams to reap the financial rewards and get better, and hopefully make some deep runs to break up the monotony of the last 8 in the previous format.
That should be the first criteria this season. Not sure but I guess it would go on the club's coefficient rank
