New CL Format Thoughts

We were seeded but it give zero benefit because everyone plays 2 teams from each pot regardless of which pot you're in yourself.
It does make a difference
If it was an open draw you could end up with playing anyone.
In an open draw there is the possibility you could play in a group with a load of crap teams or a load of top teams

I looked at the matches played by Brest so far:

They played Sturm Graz, Leverkusen, and PSV at home and Salzburg, Sparta Prague, and Barcelona away.

They still have Shakhtar at home and Real Madrid away.

For an unseeded team that looks a very easy run of fixtures to me.
I would take that over our draw.

Being in pot 1 doesn't make it easier than being in pot 4.
Regardless of what group you are in, you play 2 teams from each pot.
Villa have had easier fixtures than we have.

Villa play 2 games against teams in their pot plus 6 teams that are supposedly ranked higher than them plus they couldn't play arsenal Liverpool and ourselves.

We play 2 teams in our pot plus 6 times ranked lower than us.

Villa are probably ranked lower than their ability suggests, based on their lack of regular football in Europe.
I think this will level itself over the coming years
If we had got the results according our seeding we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.
2 wins, a loss and 2 draws is well velow what we were expected to achieve.

in mean time villa have great chance of winning it

starting to like this format definitely more exciting at this stage than the groups was. Only thing I don’t like is the first seed having no advantage to the lower seeds in difficulty of fixtures

I complained about the lack of jeopardy a few rounds ago, however it's played into our favour. If we would have finished with 8 points after 6 games under the old format we'd have probably ended up in the UEFA League. Thankfully we've still got a good chance of staying in the Champions League despite how bad we've been.

If we qualified on goal difference in 24th place (not a particularly far fetched scenario) and went on to win the whole tournament it would merely prove what everyone sensible has known for many many years - that there’s very little correlation between winning the CL and being the best team in Europe

Albeit having to play two extra games which they’ll moan about

What do we need to just stay in this competition?
The top 8 is long gone.
I see a quote from Pep saying we need 1 point? He’s surely wrong

never ever I was expecting us to be in such a bad position after I seen the draw we got which I thought is on the lucky side. with 4 must win easier games and only tricky are the two Italian sides and PSG. not expected losing to Juventus and Sporting like we did, and not beating Feyenoord. the draw vs Inter was acceptable as they are decent side and we missed big chances in that game to win it.

PSG's draw for example levels harder with Arsenal, City, Real, Bayern, Atletico all to play against and fucking hell if next round they beat us they are ahead of us with much harder draw as well.

we still need to try to finish at least in the top16, to be seeded and finish the tie at the Etihad rather than somewhere away from home.

but its extra two games which really not good for us in an already quite serious fixtures list around February where we only have top6 opponents in the PL. and if we win in the playoff we are deffo not seeded for last 16.

have a feeling we may meet Sporting or Juventus in the playoff.

if they would close it down today, for our 22nd position we would meet 11th placed Atletico Madrid. Griezmann, Alvarez would rip our defence apart imo in current form.

If we get beat in Paris we’re likely in the shit….

And might need a favour from the following bunch of cunts
