New European Super League Breakaway Threat

If it is the next step in European football I don't have much of an issue with it. The CL group stages are a joke and are just there to make money. If the result of this is that the midweek games are more competitive, with the best sides in Europe playing each other, I don't think there is much wrong with that. I would certainly rather watch us battling it out with Bayern or Barca in a league format, over us playing group games, where qualification is almost guaranteed before a ball is kicked.

The parts of the proposal that would worry me, are firstly, how it would impact on the domestic season. I don't want a breakaway Euro league where we basically stick two fingers up to the Prem.

Secondly, it shouldn't be a closed shop for the likes of Real, United and Liverpool to guarantee themselves huge amounts of money every season. Qualification should be through the domestic league, as it is now and should be based on merit and not what your football club is called.

“As part of that blueprint, the founder clubs could not be relegated for 20 years, although the remaining teams would be subject to being replaced depending upon their league position at the end of each season.”

Eugh

This is why this will go ahead.

Sources said that FIFA, football's world governing body, had been involved in developing the new format, which is expected to comprise up to 18 teams, and involve fixtures played during the regular European season.
The top-placed teams in the league would then play in a knockout format to conclude the tournament, with prize money for the winners expected to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds each year.

Also looks like we have been approached

According to insiders, a handful of English sides have been approached about joining the league, with the other candidates comprising Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

I'm not sure many of you have read this. It's just a revamped Champions League with fewer clubs and more "big" games, clearly because there's a lot more money in them. It isn't a replacement for the Premier League.

Maybe considering the reaction of football fans regarding the PPV boycott they may think again.
