Just been past the Hyde Road Stadium site on the train and noticed that they have started the ground works for the new housing development.

It also looks like they have/are doing an archaeological dig where one of the stands once stood and they have uncovered what looks part of a foundation, anyone shed any light on whose carrying on the dig?

A couple of maps showing the location of the stadium on pages 21 and 22 of attached doc

I’d be keen to hear about this. I spoke with a developer a few years back and talked about doing a dig like they had at Bradford Park Avenue and was told they’d raise it internally but then nothing happened. Hopefully they’ve got the old maps and stuff and should find some great items under there.

Just had a quick scan on the planning application cover letter and it does make mention of a "Archaeological Desktop Report prepared by Nexus Heritage" so hopefully somebody followed it up.

I do enjoy a good Archaeological report, especially with lots of maps to examine - so that was a good read. I really hope they are doing a dig there - not just for the City history but the industrial history that is there. I hadn’t realised that City had a track between the pitch and one stand - that must have been fun! But you can see why they had to move - there really was no room for the ambition of Maine Road.

I had got the impression that the site was used as a bus skid pan at one point. It was mentioned in the report - anyone know if that was so?

Also hope that new street names reflect the history of the site in some way.

Yeah that's, the site was used for many years as a skid pan for GM buses, but I think more recently since the demise of GM buses, the site was used for container storage and part scrap yard

I know Salford University do a lot of this work under contract on commercial development sites so maybe them or one of the Manchester unis? Salford did a pre-development dig on the site on the old John Rylands Mill in Gorton when I briefly worked for a housing association who were building on there

In the 90's it was still the skid pad / driver training centre for GM Buses. It also was the home for Manchester Minibus Agency which offered free bookings for minibusses for voluntary organisations.
I worked for a charitable youth association at the time and used the minibusses a few times a year and always loved being on the site imagining I was actually standing on the site of the former ground. There was no evidence whatsoever the ground was there though.
